It looks like filming on the Star Trek sequel isn't going to begin until early next year. Does that point to a summer 2013 release?
Most of the headlines regarding Zachary Quinto have been about other things this past week (it’s an odd world where someone’s sexuality is still headline news, but there you go). Yet he’s also had a natter to Cinema Blend about his next movie, the thriller Margin Call.
As part and parcel of that, the actor revealed that the shoot for the new Star Trek movie was getting closer, although it doesn’t look like it’ll begin this side of Christmas. Quinto said that it would be shooting “in the beginning of the year” now.
Given that Paramount has yet to announce a new release date for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek sequel, we can’t help but think that the firm pointers now are towards the summer of 2013. Appreciating that pre-production is underway now, Star Trek films still require a fair amount of extensive post-production work, too. And even if all concerned managed to complete the film in time for a November or December roll-out, that’s still going to put it up against the likes of the new James Bond adventure, and The Hobbit: There And Back Again.
That said, Paramount may yet be waiting to gauge how well Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol does, a franchise that’s lived in the summer until now. If that makes money in a crowded December, it may yet give Star Trek a December 2012 bow. But we doubt it.
