We’ve been waiting for several years for another film from Primer writer and director Shane Carruth. That film may well be Upstream Color…
Remember Primer, Shane Carruth’s startlingly complex yet dazzling time travel sci-fi movie? Released seven years ago, it was a great film – and given that it was made for around the price of a second-hand car, it led many to wonder what Carruth would come up with next.
For a while, it seemed Carruth would follow Primer with the decidedly odd sounding A Topiary, described on IMDb as being about “A group of young boys comes across a mysterious box that holds magical powers,” and described elsewhere as “An arthouse take on Pokémon.”
Chud, meanwhile, are reporting that Carruth is also looking to write and direct a film called Upstream Color, described as a romance drama thriller. It’ll be a similarly small, indie title like Primer, and involves a 50-something composer and farmer, and a record shop worker who may or may not be a sociopath.
A Topiary is expected to start production next year, but in the meantime, Carruth will be blitzing through the shoot this November. Little else is known about Upstream Color as yet, but given the strength of Carruth’s debut, we’ll be keeping a close eye on his next film, and will share anything else we discover about it as it arrives.
