The young Han Solo movie will start filming in early 2017, its directors confirm, with preparation just getting started...

Alden Ehrenreich

The casting had been confirmed, we thought, back in May (see below), but on the stage of the Star Wars Celebration over the weekend, directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord have announced that Alden Ehrenreich is indeed the new young Han Solo.

The pair revealed that he was the first person they auditioned for the role too, subsequently seeing a few thousand other candidates.

Lord and Miller are now based in London preparing the new movie, which is due to start filming in late January or early February next year. It’s due in cinemas on May 25th 2018.

From May 2016

And on this occasion, the rumour mill got it right. The casting of the young Han Solo for the upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie has been completed, and as you well know if you read the headline to this piece, the job has gone to Alden Ehrenreich.

The young Han Solo movie is being directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, and the pair oversaw a casting process that in itself cast a very wide net. Amongst those who made it to the final shortlist were Jack Reynor and Taron Egerton, with Miles Teller, Dave Franco and Emory Cohen also making progress in the process.

But it’s Ehrenreich who’s won out. He’s currently best known for his work in the likes of Beautiful Creatures, Blue Jasmine and, more recently, Hail, Caesar!

The young Han Solo Star Wars film is released on May 25th 2018. We’ll have a lot more on it between now and then…

Extreme Ghostbusters: revisiting an underappreciated cartoon

We look back at an often-overlooked part of the Ghostbusters legacy: it's Extreme Ghostbusters...

There was a time when no one cared about Ghostbusters. It was the late 90s - the pre-Pokemon, post-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days to be exact. Nobody’s kid was exactly clamouring for a sequel, reboot, or a Ghostbusters continuation of any kind - except for Dan Aykroyd, who was practically lobbying for a third instalment while sitting front row at the Ghostbusters II premiere. Which is why we have this: an awkwardly timed, tonally disruptive Ghostbusters animated series.

Enter a brand new cartoon that picked up the sticky, ectoplasm-covered mantle of The Real Ghostbusters and wore it slightly askew to evoke that wholesome sense of 1990s irreverence: Extreme Ghostbusters.

Living up to its name, XGB was extreme indeed. One glance at its radically inclusive team line-up is all you need to notice that. The XGB are made up of people who weren’t usually portrayed as heroes on cartoons (and still aren’t, if we’re being honest). Also, the writing team was well aware of how its predecessor was both intentionally and unintentionally disturbing - because several of them had worked on it. That's why the horror elements of XGB were dialled way up, becoming much darker than The Real Ghostbusters was during its heyday.

Extreme Ghostbusters had the balls to tackle heavy subject matter and broader social themes when we weren't expecting it. It invited us into the psyches of its main characters, chronicling the struggles of their personal lives which usually intertwined with the ghost-of-the-week plots. To refer to XGB as a serialised story is stretching it, but there was a loose sense of long-term continuity being played with, which more often than not took the form of throwbacks to The Real Ghostbusters.

(Oh, and yes that was a redesigned version of classic RGB villain Samhain in the intro. But no, he never appears in the actual show. So why was there was an action figure released as part of the corresponding toyline? Who knows.)

With this dimension added to its storytelling, XGB was often thoughtful in ways that its parent series couldn’t be. RGB's optimistic cheese was swapped for melancholic decay simply because the climate of chidren's television at the time could allow it. Thanks to programmes like Batman: The Animated Series, which had aired in the interim between The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters, cartoons for kids could speak to all ages and be adult without being rated R. The writing staff, guided by the likes of Richard Raynis, Jeff Kline, and Dan Aykroyd, would take advantage of this pre-millennial moodiness to usher the franchise into more dramatic territory.

Extreme Ghostbusters was produced by Adelaide Productions, the same animation house that gave us other animated TV adaptations of movie franchises that didn't necessarily need it during the mid-90s, like Jumanji, Men In Black, Starship Troopers, and Matthew Broderick...whoops... Godzilla.

So why haven’t you heard about XGB before? Or if you have, how come you haven’t seen or heard much of it since? (It’s on Hulu in the US now if you want to catch up.) I’m sure the reasons I just outlined above played a role in its limited presence. It was bad enough that Extreme Ghostbusters was written for an older audience. That it wound up lost in syndication and aired at ungodly hours of the morning didn’t help much either.

And let’s just say the marketing team didn’t fully grasp the essence of the show, or its true appeal. I mean, take a look at this promo:

Does that make you want to watch this show? In retrospect, maybe. But even if it showcases the most horrific monsters from the series, it downplays the XGB's mature direction. All of those factors combined left this experiment in genre-bending at a disadvantage, much like one of the marginalised outsiders you’d find on its team. Speaking of which…

THE CHARACTERS

The Extreme Ghostbusters were formed when a handful of misfit students signed up for Dr. Egon Spengler’s college course on the paranormal. Instead of making them buy really expensive textbooks they'll only look at a handful of times, Spengler teaches these four whippersnappers all about busting: what it is, when it got started, and how it can make them feel good. These kids are:

Kylie Griffin

Kylie is a goth girl. Since this series came out way before My Chemical Romance, she’s legitimately goth. But this was also a long time after darkwave came and went, so her influences are a little foggy. Still, Kylie looks like Siouxsie Sioux if she made a cameo in Rollerball. So that’s commendable.

It’s implied that Kylie is in her neo-Elvira phase because of the death of her grandmother Rose, who she talks to during the series from time to time. Finding out what happened to her after she passed on is perhaps Kylie's biggest motivation as a character. It’s also seems like she's got a thing for studious older men with ponytails and inadequacy issues (wink-wink).

Kylie is voiced by Tara Strong, who has worked on pretty much every cartoon ever animated past 1987. But you might know her as Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls.

As XGB goes on, Kylie learns much from Egon. She eventually evolves into a junior version of him, having gained an expert knowledge base on occult mysteries from firsthand experience. Kylie also had a love/hate relationship with…

Eduardo Rivera

No, not Geraldo Rivera. Eduardo. Poor guy. I bet he gets that all the time.

Characterised as a “cynical Latino”, Eduardo is XGB’s answer to Bill Murray/Peter Venkman. His saracastic demeanour conceals the more sensitive persona he hides within that's mostly fuelled by an internalised fear of failure (thanks for getting up close and personal, official website).

Mostly though, Eduardo is all about giving Kylie a hard time when he’s not jumping to her defence. Or saving her life. Or taking the blame for her. Or gazing longingly at her as she walks away. Or having intimate fantasies about her alone in the dark while touching his cartoon... proton pack. Because he's a Ghostbuster. What did you think I was going to say?

Rino Romano, whose vocal chords immortalised Tuxedo Mask in the first thirteen episodes of the original DIC dub of Sailor Moon, Batman in The Batman and Luis Sera from Resident Evil 4, plays Eduardo and does a bang-up job doing it. I mean, his vocal stylings sound just "cynical" and "Latino" enough to make it believable for me.

Roland Jackson

Since he enrolled in Egon’s paranormal studies class after seeing the Ecto-1 displayed at a car show once, Roland is most certainly the practical one of the bunch. He’s a mechanic who prides himself taking the WYSIWYG approach to life, which makes him a great help with tuning up the Ecto-1, repairing the proton packs, de-sliming the microwave, etc. Overall, Roland's a nice guy. And… that’s pretty much all you need to know.

Mr. Jackson was played by Carlton from the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air himself, Alfonso Ribeiro. Did you know he hosts America’s Funniest Home Videos now? (Does that make him the new Bob Saget?)

Garrett Miller

Garrett may have been born without the ability to walk, but that doesn’t stop him from living a thrill-seeking, extreme sports kind of lifestyle. He’s the wisecracking daredevil of the group and he’s not afraid to rub it in anyone’s face. Having a main character with a life-affecting disability remains groundbreaking to this day, but XGB’s landmark in cartoon progress was taken down a few notches when their own friggin’ toyline failed to release a friggin’ action figure for him. As a matter fact, he’s the only Ghostbuster in the history of Ghostbusters not to have a toy likeness of himself collecting dust in Goodwills and Salvation Armies across the country. Way to go, Trendmasters. You had one job.

Fortunately, Garrett was still the kids’ favourite in most of the focus groups conducted prior to the show’s debut, so his character was considered a success. There’s a lot of insight about this how Garrett was created in this vintage interview with co-creator Bob Higgins. I recommend giving it a read if you’re looking for more general information about the creative process behind the scenes.

Does Garrett’s voice sound familiar to you? That’s because it belongs to Jason Marsden, who you may recognise from such animated features as Gummi Bears, Peter Pan and the Pirates, Kim Possible, Lion King II, and A Goofy Movie. Oh, he was also Thackery Binx from Hocus Pocus, and that strange grey-haired kid from Eerie Indiana, an obscure cancelled TV show I happen to have strong feelings for.

Egon Spengler

Yep, he’s still blonde for no reason. But he got skills. And you need those to be a mentor. Also, glasses.

In Extreme Ghostbusters, Egon is an insecure overthinker, so he’s a lot like he was in The Real Ghostbusters. (In fact, he's still portrayed by Maurice LaMarche.) Except now, he’s having a mid-life crisis which amplifies his neuroses. He serves the XGB in a managerial role for the most part, though there are certain points throughout the series that he does step up to save the day (pilot excluded).

Witnessing his students’ progress is both encouraging and discouraging for Egon; he's proud to teach them how to bust, but he misses busting himself. I don’t know why he’s freaking out, because he's still pretty good at it. Just ask...

Janine Melnitz

Janine gets her old job back at the Firehouse when she also signs up for Egon’s Paranormal 101 course, because she’s a gigantic stalker of Swimfan proportions. According to the old official website, she spent all of her time between RGB and XGB“flitting from job to job… trying not to pine for Prof. Spengler” (She's voiced by Pat Musick here, by the way).

Even though she greatly helps Egon out by keeping his books and clipping his toenails and all that jazz, he still doesn’t seem to notice her persistent advances. Maybe that's because he’s secretly in love with…

Slimer

I mean, Janine says they’ve been living together for a whole decade now. Slimer might look a little different by the way, but this big floating pound of goo is still the same adorable troublemaker from beyond that he’s always been. Which is good; he’s the grounding force of the Ghostbusters franchise, ghoul help us. Except... he's a little withdrawn in Extreme Ghostbusters, and not featured as prominently as he was during RGB. I, for one, am okay with that, even if it makes my face a little sad.

Slimer has friction with Eduardo sometimes, since he’s the “Peter Venkman” of the group. Or could be because of his hair. Either way, Slimer's redesign makes him a little moodier and more odd, but that only makes us want to give him a big ol' hug - after we put on our hazmat suits, of course.

Billy West voices our little Slimeball this time and does a great job doing it.

Now that we've introduced the cast of characters, let's look at the best episodes Extreme Ghostbusters cranked out. By the way, I recommend watching each one of these in the middle of the night. Preferably in an abandoned structure of some kind, with sharp objects lying around and a heavy breathing sound coming from somewhere you can't tell.

Or the comfort of your own home works too. Whatever.

Episode Highlights

Ep. 1-2: "Darkness At Noon" Parts I & II
Written by Billy Brown, Dan Angel & Dean Stefan

The Extreme Ghostbusters’ first adventure covers a lot of territory, even for a lengthy two-part origin story. Achira, an entity that specialises in spreading disease, is unleashed by subway workers (much like how the Door of Hell is opened up in the Real Ghostbusters episode Knock, Knock). Egon can’t handle it alone, so he forms the new team from his small class roster. He gives them on the job training while infected, and while Kylie is possessed by Achira herself. Now that's what you call a trial by slime. Er, fire.

Ep. 4: "Fear Itself"
Written by Duane Cappizi

Does everyone want to know what the deepest, darkest fears of each one of the Extreme Ghostbusters are? If you do, I’m not going to spoil it for you. Watch this episode and find out. Or read the Wikipedia entry if you’re strapped for time. Up to you.

Ep. 5: "Deadliners"
Written by Duane Cappizi

I admit, I was on the fence about Extreme Ghostbusters as a whole... until I watched this episode. Deadliners might be one of the most terrifying cartoon episodes I’ve ever set eyes on. I’m not saying that it made me pee myself or anything, but I was definitely squirming at certain points.

Actually, I’m surprised this episode is not more notorious than it is. It simultaneously takes on R.L. Stine and Hellraiser in the same bloody axe swoop. The XGB must defeat Cenobite-like creatures who operate on innocent people and turn them into monsters. Will they rescue that group of screaming people tied together with entrails in the corner over there? I wish I could say yes.

Ep. 6: "Casting The Runes"
Written by John Semper

A set of runes is stolen from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When you touch them, you are sent to another dimension and put in the indentured servitude of a very unsympathetic hell-god. So don't do it! Whoops, looks like Eduardo just did. Well...shit.

Ep. 8: "Home Is Where The Horror Is"
Written by Neil Ruttenberg

What happens when two young boys get abducted by an older woman when they stop by her home, hoping to sell her candy? The Ghostbusters have to step in and rescue them because it turns out the entire house itself is one big ghost. Yep, I'm not sleeping tonight.

Ep. 9: "Killjoys"
Written by Alexx Van Dyne

What would really disturb half of XGB’s target audience - and then some? Hmm. What about Vampire Clowns?

There's a high probability that Killjoys might give you nightmares because most people are absolutely terrified of clowns. Me, not so much. But I understand why they’re scary, just as I understand that being bitten by a vampire is not very fun and doesn't feel too great. As does Eduardo, who not only gets bit by one, but eventually becomes a vampire clown himself whil slowly losing his sanity.

The gang tries to save him, but…

Ep. 18: "Ghost Apocalyptic Future"
Written by Steve Perry

Sci-fi visionary Steve Perry must be an X-Men fan, because he wrote this episode, a tribute to Days Of Future Past (and a damn good one at that). When Kylie is suddenly catapulted to a dark future in which demons and ghosts rule New York, the gang works with a mysterious man from said future who switched places with her to get her back. Eventually they do, but after learning that they will all go on to be remembered throughout history as major heroes... except for Garrett.

Ep. 23: "Slimer’s Sacrifice"
Written by Adam Gilead

When Slimer finds himself trapped inside a containment unit (again), Eduardo must travel inside it himself to rescue the big anthropomorphic booger to stop Ragnarok from happening (also again). Cue cameos from busted ghosts of yore.

Ep. 24: "Grundelesque"
Written by Martin Olson

Remember Grundel from RGB? He comes back here and creeps out Kylie and Roland’s little brother. It’s disturbing, but not as disturbing as Deadliners was. Still, if the classic Grundel episode still bothers you, this  will most likely have a similar effect on you. Or your children.

(Actually, forget I said that. Don’t show them this. Ever.)

Ep. 29: "Til Death Do We Start"
Written by Lane Ralchert

If you thought Deadliners dialed the horror elements up to eleven, this episode takes them to twelve, thirteen and beyond. It's about a well-to-do "yuppie" who is being harassed by the ghost of a skinless vengeful bride who can fly. She also screams. A lot.

Don't believe me? Just look at those screencaps up there! No, don't look away. Keep looking... yes, that's it... keep your eyes on the prize...

Ep. 35: "Rage"
Written by Thomas Pugsley & Greg Klein

Egon stays with Eduardo while the Firehouse is being fumigated. The problem is, his brother, an NYPD officer, hates the Ghostbusters and doesn’t approve of Eduardo's involvement with them, so it’s just a little awkward. Oh, and there’s a troll going on a rampage across the city too.

Ep. 36: "Heart of Darkness"
By Neil Ruttenberg

John DeLancie guest stars as Dr. Edward Kirilian, one of Egon’s old colleagues, who goes crazy and tries to open up a portal to the netherworld using crystal skulls at Kylie's old junior high. Or something.

Ep. 37: "The Sphinx"
Written by Steve Roberts

Egon hits a mid-life crisis when he helps the extreme team hunt down The Sphinx, a creature who drains the brain power of the smartest people in the city when they fail to answer his riddle correctly. Admittedly, it’s a riddle we’ve all heard before in other, more cheesier cartoons than this. But since Egon gets a confidence boost by solving it after beating himself up all episode, we’ll file this plot under “simple yet effective.”

Ep. 39-40: "Back In The Saddle" Pt. I & II
Written by Gary Stuart Kaplan, Larry Swerdlove, Brooks Wachtel

The series finale sees a long overdue event in the XGB universe come to pass - a crossover with The Real Ghostbusters team. Janine organises a surprise party for Egon’s big 40th birthday and Peter, Ray, and Winston all show-up. But when a new ghost is reported across town, the original squad insists that they trap it instead of the XGB which leads to tension ahoy. In the end, the two groups learn how to work together to stop a mysterious entity from the Bermuda Triangle that’s heading towards New York City.

Back In The Saddle is the perfect note for Extreme Ghostbusters to go out on, as it demonstrates how the “new kids” handle things, and how much deeper and richer their world is compared to that of their predecessors. This isn’t to say that the Real Ghostbusters themselves are portrayed as shallow here; it's just that their behaviour is surprisingly consistent with how it was on RGB, so much so that it's almost as if no time has passed at all. On top of that, it's obvious Adelaide Productions took great pains to animate their faces in the same style as RGB instead of redesigning them completely.

This is also a frustratingly premature endpoint for a show that’s still starting up. Back In The Saddle feels more like the premiere of a second season that never happened, one in which the RGB crew was added to the cast, and the show could build a stronger continuity with its past while defining a new kind of future. (I guess we'll have to settle for IDW's comics instead.)

Extreme Ghostbusters spent a great deal of time and energy carving out its own dark niche in a franchise known more for its laughs than its scares. Extreme Ghostbusters was wise to pick up on the dark threads that TheReal Ghostbusters left dangling in its wake, weaving together a rather mature exploration of the horrors of life, death, and beyond. It’s too bad that theoretical second season didn’t happen. It would have been great.

Extreme Ghostbusters might not have made a dent in TV history, but it did go on to enjoy success on the video game platform, with twodifferent sidescrolling Game Boy Advance releases and a Playstation game called The Ultimate Invasion, a first-person shooter like Time Crisis but not nearly as pretty looking.

If you're dying to know more about the Extreme Ghostbusters and the effects it had on Ghostbusters in general, YouTube user Phelous has a lot more to say on the topic in this highly informative video I suggest checking out. Until then, bust you later!

Stephen Harber ain't afraid of no ghosts. Leprechauns, well, that's a different story. You can find him on Twitter @onlywriterever. Check out the graphic novel project he's been working on too, while you're at it. Or else.

Kong: Skull Island: first image, plot details

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts teases the gigantic size of the newest King Kong incarnation.

Kong: Skull Island might not come out until next year, but the 2017 summer tentpole (well, March tentpole) will have a presence at next week's San Diego Comic Con. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures are getting a jump start on the hype with the release of the first image from the Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson-led blockbuster. Check it out...

The image, via Entertainment Weekly, came with some plot-revealing quotes from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who teased that Kong: Skull Island would be set in the '70s, "a time where it was believable that we could still be confronted with myth." It stars Hiddleston as an ex-British SAS tracker and Larson as a war photographer who venture to the island when a NASA-based world mapping program finds a mysterious island... Skull Island.

“We’re very explicitly not telling the beauty and the beast story,” Vogt-Roberts told EW. “From the size of the skull [in the photo above], you can tell that things on this island are much bigger than audiences are used to with traditional Kong lore. Our Kong is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen, and that translates to a lot of different things on the island.”

How big, you may or may not ask? Vogt-Roberts insists that Skull Island's Kong is the biggest in the history of cinema. While Peter Jackson's Kong was on the smaller side around 25 feet and the original Kong varied in size from 25 to 50 feet, depending on whether or not he was hanging off the Empire State Building, Skull Island's Kong is bigger than both of them.

Why the size change? Vogt-Roberts says that "the thing that most interested me was, how big do you need to make [Kong], so that when someone lands on this island and doesn’t believe in the idea of myth, the idea of wonder – when we live in a world of social and civil unrest, and everything is crumbling around us, and technology and facts are taking over – how big does this creature need to be, so that when you stand on the ground and you look up at it, the only thing that can go through your mind is: ‘That’s a god.".

We'll have to wait until the trailer drops to find out just exactly how big the newest Kong is. In the meantime, we can make due with this glorious promo image and the reminder of how great this cast is. Co-starring alongside Hiddleston and Larson is are Samuel L Jackson, John Goodman, John C Reilly, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero.

Pokemon Go: 25 tips for success in the mobile app

Pokemon Go has taken the world by storm, as fans hit the streets to catch em all. Here are 25 tips for success in your Pokemon adventure.

This article originally appeared at Den Of Geek US.

Pokemon Go is arguably Nintendo's biggest hit in years. The mobile game developed by Niantic has already made $14 million just one week after its release on the iOS and Android app stores. And with better active user numbers than Tinder, it's clear the app isn't likely to give up its stranglehold on top of the charts anytime soon.

But if you were late to the party, you may find yourself woefully behind some of your peers. The strength or power level of the Pokemon you can catch in-game is directly related to the level of your Pokemon "trainer." In other words, those who have spent more time in the game will be able to collect more powerful creatures. Even now, just one week in, some players are finding it impossible to take down other players' gym leaders because they're simply too powerful.

If you've got some catching up to do when it comes to catching Pokemon, you've come to the right place. We've put together a comprehensive list of tips on everything from leveling quickly to gym battles and catching those elusive rares. Here are 25 tips for success in Pokemon Go.

Catch Em All. No, Seriously.

If you tend to play in the same general area a lot, like say, near your house or place of work, you will likely find a lot of the same Pokemon over and over. As boring as it might be to catch your 20th Zubat, all of that repetition will pay off eventually. Every time you catch a duplicate Pokemon, you can trade it into the Professor for a candy that is used to evolve a Pokemon of that type. Catching as many duplicates as possible is actually key to eventually making at least one of your Pokemon incredibly strong.

Turn Off the AR

Pokemon Go is an "augmented reality" game and seeing the little creatures pop up everywhere from your living room to the local bookstore can be pretty amusing. But when the AR is "on" so is your camera, and this can actually make catching the Pokemon a bit more difficult as you actually have to aim the phone at where it the Pokemon is within the "real world." Turning the AR off will make catching Pokemon just a bit more efficient and it will likely save you some battery life as well.

The "Nearby" Menu Can Save You Time

That menu in the bottom right of your screen can save you a lot of time. It will show you at any given time what type of Pokemon are nearby and how close they are. There are different thoughts about this online, but in general, one "footprint" means the Pokemon is within 100 yards, two means within 200 yards and so on. If you're debating whether you want to take an extra 5 minutes on your lunch break to go chase something down, take a glance first and see if a Pokemon is actually within easy walking distance or not. Pokemon that are grayed out are ones that you have not caught yet, and therefore, might be worth some extra effort.

Pokeball Patience

Pokeballs are not an unlimited resource in this game. It's possible to "miss" on a throw or to have a rare Pokemon escape and run away if you're not careful. To increase the odds of a successful capture, hold your finger on the ball and wait. A circle will begin to pulse around the creature, gradually moving inward. You want to wait until the circle is at its narrowest point before letting the Pokeball fly. If you nail the opening, you'll have a much better chance of success.

Throw Bonuses Add Up

In order to catch a Pokemon, you need to hit the creature somewhere around its head. But not all throws are created equal. The game will actually reward you with extra XP if you time the throw just right or shoot it with a nice arc or curve to it. If you want to get fancy, hold your finger down on the ball and then spin the ball with your thumb before letting it go. If one of these "curve balls" hits the Pokemon, you'll get extra points. This is a great way to level up faster and make those boring duplicate captures a little more interesting.

Pokemon Love Razz Berries

As you level up, you'll get access to better items that you can use to capture Pokemon, recover from battle, and more. One of the most useful items you'll get around level 7 or 8 is the Razz Berry. Razz Berries are essentially Pokemon bait. It distracts them and prevents them from running away while you're trying to get a capture. That said, you'll want to save the Razz Berries for Pokemon that are more difficult to capture. Those with yellow or red circles around them are good targets for Razz Berries.

Candy Hoarder

Some Pokemon don't require a ton of candy to evolve, but don't go spending all of your candy in the early going. Remember, the higher your trainer, the more powerful the initial Pokemon you capture will be. Save up all of your candy for the later levels before you start spending them to evolve. This way, you can evolve the most powerful Pokemon you've caught by converting all of your duplicates from the early levels into candy.

Select Your Champion

If you want to become a Gym Leader, it's probably best to focus on evolving and powering up just one or two Pokemon, at least at the start, instead of going with multiple Pokemon that only make it to an average power level. If you find one you like, try to farm that same general location on a regular basis so that you can keep evolving the same creature.

Take a Bus or an Uber

I definitely don't recommend playing Pokemon Go in the car. Unless someone else is driving, that is. Hopping on a bus or taking an Uber is a great way to cover a lot of distance quickly and hopefully see a lot of different Pokemon pop up within a short time frame. Just be sure to quickly tap any Pokemon that spawn because they won't stay on the screen for long if your vehicle is moving quickly.

Learn to Quickly Snipe Pokestops with the "X"

Speaking of car tips, you don't have to walk right up to a Pokestop to collect the items. As long as you get relatively close, you should be able to access the Pokestop and then quickly hit the "X" button to loot all of the goodies. In other words, you don't have to tap each item to collect them all. This can be helpful if someone else is driving you through a crowded area with a lot of Pokestops and you want to hit all of them within a short timespan.

Explore Town

Speaking of crowded or busy areas, many Pokemon Go players have found great success heading into a major city. If you're bored one weekend with nothing to do, take a field trip to a busy section of the largest city near you. You'll likely find Pokestops at just about every other bar or significant landmark. What's really great is that Pokestops respawn in only a handful of minutes in most cases, which means you can map out a walking route where you can just keep looting the same Pokestops over and over.

Play at Different Times

Just like the old school Pokemon games, some of these creatures only like to come out and play during certain times of day. If you really want to catch them all, you might have to adjust your evening schedule. But hey, a little nightly exercise instead of just sitting on the couch watching Netflix again never hurt anyone, right?

Egg Incubators Might Be Worth the Investment

Pokestops will drop both Pokemon eggs and egg incubators. But the incubators tend to be a bit more rare and the game only gives you one incubator that you can use repeatedly. If you have a major collection of eggs just sitting around waiting for an incubator, this is one case where it might be worth spending a bit of real money in the in-game shop in order to grab another one. This way, when you walk around, you can incubate more than one egg at the same time.

Seek Out Different Areas

If you truly want to become a masterful Pokemon trainer, you'll have to find time to go to different parts of town where you otherwise might never find yourself. For example, water-based Pokemon tend to spawn near bodies of water or rivers. Grass-based Pokemon are more likely to be found out in the countryside than in the middle of some urban sprawl.

Lucky Eggs Can Help Close the Gap

One more cash shop investment that might actually be worth it if you want to be competitive quickly is the Lucky Egg. This type of egg significantly increases the amount of XP your trainer earns for catching Pokemon and other activities while it is active. If you find your Pokemon hopelessly outclassed by the competition, drop a dollar or two on some Lucky Eggs to get your trainer level up, and you'll soon find that you're fighting on a much more even battlefield.

Roll Up to the Gym with a Team

There is one alternative, however, if you're not a high enough level on your own to take out someone's powerful Gym guardian. If you meet up with other Pokemon Go players of the same faction, you can actually all attack a Gym at the same time. Your Pokemon still might not be standing at the end of the battle, but if your team takes the Gym, you should still get at least some credit and XP for the accomplishment.

Traditional Pokemon Strengths and Weaknesses Are in Play

Most of the commentary about Pokemon from the mainstream press since the game launched has been along the lines of just how cute many of these imaginary creatures are. But what longtime Pokemon veterans know is that sometimes the cutest creature is packing the nastiest punch. When you're about to go to battle for a Gym, pay attention to your Pokemon's available abilities and how they might match up against your opponent. A database like this one can help you figure out what each Pokemon's greatest strengths and weaknesses are so that you can plan your upcoming battle accordingly.

Always Dodge First

When starting a Gym battle, it's generally a good idea to go in with a defensive frame of mind. If you're not sure how quick or powerful the opposing Pokemon is, be ready to dodge their opening attack immediately by swiping on the screen. Then, you can counter-attack by tapping the opposing creature or holding down with a longer press to unleash your special attack.

You Can Immediately Reclaim a Lost Gym If You're Fast Enough

So you've hung out at your local coffee shop or another spot near a Pokemon Gym all day when it happens: Your gym is under attack, and you're about to lose control to the opposing side. That's OK, don't panic. There's actually a pretty sneaky tip you can use to take the gym back and frustrate your opponent. As your gym begins to fall, prepare a team to re-enter. As soon as the Gym turns from your color back to white, try and reclaim the Gym before the opposing side does. Chances are, they might not have even been aware that you were in the area. If you can quickly snipe the Gym back to your side, you'll leave your opponent fuming and possibly unwilling to continue.

Earn Free Pokecoins By Coordinating Your Gym Defence

You can earn free Pokecoins for about every 20 hours that you remain in control of a Gym. If you're working with a team, coordinate your schedules so that someone is always available to help defend. If your Pokemon remains in the Gym for the duration, you'll earn some in-game currency for your efforts.

Use Lures Strategically

Pokestops and the in-game shop have Lures that can be used to, well, "lure" Pokemon to a Pokestop. If you're playing with friends, head downtown or to another congested area with a lot of stops and let each of your friends use a lure at a different stop along the route. Then, you can all walk from stop to stop and pretty much have an endless supply of Pokemon without having to wait around at any given stop for the next creature to appear.

Save Those Special Pokeballs for Rare Pokemon

As you level up, your trainer will get access to more powerful Pokeballs. These Pokeballs have a greater chance of capture success, so you should really hold onto them until needed. Don't waste a more powerful Pokeball on a "green circle" or easy to catch creature. Wait until you see a Pokemon with a yellow or red circle to whip out the big guns.

Force Quit rhe App and Reload Quickly to Get Around Server Issues

Pokemon Go, like many online-based games, has had to deal with a lot of server crashes in the early going. It can be frustrating to be in the middle of a Gym battle or capture attempt, only to have the game freeze on you. When this happens, force the app to quit on your phone and quickly reload. If you're fast enough, the game might pick up right where you left off, as if the server hiccup never even happened.

Buy a Battery Pack

In addition to server issues, many players are also complaining about battery drain. If you really want to become a Pokemon master, a battery pack might not be a bad idea. You can find plenty for cheap on Amazon and other online retailers.

Don't Forget the Sunscreen

Finally, one last piece of advice: walking around outside all day is a concept that might be foreign to some gamers. If you fit this description, don't forget to protect yourself or else you could end up looking as orange and red as that last Krabby you caught.

Kickboxer: Vengeance arrives in cinemas in September, with JCVD on board. Here's the first trailer...

Heading to cinemas later this year is the new take on Kickboxer, that’s going by the name of Kickboxer: Vengeance. It appears to be Jean-Claude Van Damme-endorsed too, given that the muscly Brusselly one is appearing in the new film.

Alongside him in the cast? Well, he’s passing the torch to Alain Moussi, with Dave Bautista, Gina Carano, Georges St-Pierre and Cain Velasquez in the cast too. John Stockwell has directed the movie, which lands in cinemas in September.

What’s more, we’ve got the first trailer for the movie too.

And here’s the synopsis too…

Eric and Kurt Sloane are the descendants of a well-known Venice, California-based family of martial artists. Kurt has always been in older brother, Eric’s shadow, as he lacks the instincts needed to become a champion. Against Kurt’s concerns, Eric accepts a paid offer and travels to Thailand to challenge the Muay Thai champion Tong Po and fails with dire consequences. Kurt sets out for revenge. He trains with his brother’s mentor, Durand, for a Muay Thai fight against the merciless champion, Tong Po. Technical Boy - one of the modern New Gods - arrives in this new image from Starz’ American Gods adaptation...

Starz' American Gods TV series - which seeks to adapt Neil Gaiman's much-loved novel to the small screen, under the stewardship of Hannibal's Bryan Fuller - comes very hotly anticipated.

That's why we're extra excited today to share yet another official image. Entertainment Weekly has now released the first image of Bruce Langley as Technical Boy, one of the New Gods, who symbolises modern society's obsession with technology. You can see the image in the gallery above.

“We needed to establish a frame of reference for the aesthetic of the Technical Boy, and [director] David Slade, I believe, was the first one to say ‘Commodore 64,’” showrunner Bryan Fuller has told EW. “That will mean more to the audience once they understand more of the Technical Boy’s story — why the Commodore 64 and that era of technology is so informative for the look of him and the story and the general aesthetic when we first sample his world.”

In the gallery, you'll also find images of the Jack's Crocodile Bar set, Ricky Whittle's Shadow Moon, Ian McShane's Mr Wednesday and Pablo Schreiber's Mad Sweeney.

American Gods start date

American Gods is expected to broadcast at some point in 2017. As we hear more info about its premiere date, we'll be sure to update you.

You'll find more info regarding American Gods on pages 2 and 3 of this article...

American Gods story details: official synopsis

Season 1, Bryan Fuller has confirmed, won't attempt to adapt the entire novel. It will tackle part of it while "making room for more story".

"The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs."

American Gods casting

Sleepy Hollow alum Orlando Jones is the latest actor to sign up for a part in American Gods. He'll play Mr. Nancy, a character that The Hollywood Reporter describes thusly:

"The old African trickster god more commonly known as Anansi, Mr. Nancy also is one of Mr. Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) oldest confidantes. [...] Nancy is ready to bring this new America (and its new gods) to its knees, desperate to light a fire and watch the whole world burn."

Production on American Gods' first season has already begun (see page two of this article for proof!), so we'd expect that Mr Jones will be heading to set fairly soon to bring Mr. Nancy to life.

We've also learnt today that Demore Barnes (12 Monkeys) has been added to the cast as Mr. Ibis, a character described as "the keeper of stories, past and present, [who] recounts them with great relish."

Elsewhere in American Gods' impressive cast, Ricky Whittle will portray lead character Shadow Moon. Whittle made his name here in the UK on soap opera Hollyoaks and football drama The Dream Team, before doing a stint in sequins on Strictly Come Dancing and then relocating across the Atlantic for Mistresses and The 100.

Shadow begins Gaiman's novel as a recently released ex-con with a mysterious past and a penchant for coin tricks. When Shadow's path crosses with that of Wednesday, things get seriously weird for him. And we mean seriously.

Emily Browning (Sucker PunchLegend, A Series Of Unfortunate Events) will play Laura Moon, who’s been described thusly in an official character bio:

"Shadow Moon’s wife, who has been preparing for her husband's pending prison release. Little does she know that she will go on an unexpected journey that leads her to an epiphany about her relationship and affords her a second chance to get things right."

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green said this about the casting...

"You don’t need a magical coin when you have Emily Browning. She brings a fascinating spark of life to every role she inhabits and we are tickled she will be lighting up Laura Moon and bringing her to life in more ways than one on American Gods."

The X-Files star Gillian Anderson has signed up to play Media, a character that CultBox has described thusly:

"[T]he mouthpiece for the New Gods, functioning as their public face and sales representative, by taking the form of various iconic celebrities.

"Described as 'perky' and 'always in control', the character lives off the attention and worship that people give to screens-to their laptops, their TVs, to their iPhones in their hands while they watch their TVs."

That sounds like a role that Anderson could really thrive in, doesn't it? We look forward to seeing Media in action.

A while back, THR broke the news that Deadwood star and upcoming Game Of Thrones ensemble member Ian McShane has nabbed the part of Mr Wednesday, a mysterious figure who recruits powerful beings for the war between the old gods and the new.

The news has gone down extremely well with fans of the novel and with its author, Neil Gaiman:

“When you write a beloved character (beloved with, or despite, or because of all his faults) like Mr. Wednesday, you get to watch the Internet trying to cast the role. I’ve seen a hundred names suggested, but few make me grin like Ian McShane does. I’ve already been lucky enough to have him in one film (he was bright blue in it, animated, and probably Polish). Now I count myself even luckier: he’s made the journey from Lovejoy to American Gods. Yesterday was Super Tuesday. Today is Wonderful Wednesday.”

Additionally, Yetide Badaki (Masters of Sex, NCIS: New Orleans) will portray Bilquis "an ancient goddess of love", while relative newcomer Bruce Langley has nabbed the role of Technician Boy, the "new god of technology".

Crispin Glover (Back To The Future, Charlie's Angels) and Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom, Parenthood) have joined American Gods in the respective roles of trickster convict Low-Key Lyesmith and slimy representative of the new Gods, Mr World, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Sean Harris (PrometheusMission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) was due to play "down on his luck leprechaun" Mad Sweeney, but had to depart the project for personal reasons back in May. Orange Is The New Black's Pablo Schreiber (pictured above) has stepped in to replace Mr Harris and production is pressing ahead.

American Gods production: shooting underway, first set image

The image above is the first picture released from the set of American Gods, which serves as iron-clad proof that this series is actually happening. This isn't the first attempt to adapt American Gods, but by making it to the filming stage it's already further along than any of the prior versions.

American Gods crew: writers, directors, showrunners

Bryan Fuller (HannibalPushing Daisies, the new Star Trek TV series) and Michael Green (SmallvilleHeroes) are the showrunners and lead writers of this Starz joint. Joining them on script duties will be the author of the original novel, Neil Gaiman, whom Fuller has confirmed will be writing "episodes" (plural) of the show.

David Slade (Hard Candy30 Days Of Night), fresh from working with Fuller on Hannibal, has also come aboard as a director and executive producer.

American Gods broacast: where can I watch it?

US viewers will be able to catch the show on cable channel Starz. There's currently no UK broadcaster lined up for the show.

American Gods future: spin-off plans

Bryan Fuller has great ambitions for the series, which, if successful, he suggests could spawn "a Marvel Universe, not with superheroes but with gods."

"We may have spin-offs of American Gods that follow lesser gods in greater detail than you might in the main series", he told Crave Online in November 2015.

American Gods concept art

In June 2015, Neil Gaiman shared this image, described as "Shadow's dream of the bone orchard".

And Bryan Fuller shared this arresting title image:

A new slab of DLC for Star Wars: Battlefront is on the way soon. Here's the launch trailer for Death Star...

Update: If you've finished blasting through Star Wars: Battlefront's Bespin DLC, there's good news - the next expansion isn't too far away.

Announced as part of the Star Wars Celebration Europe jamboree, Death Star will, as its name implies, take us into the sleek corridors of the Empire's deadly battle station. The expansion will bring in two new playable characters - Chewbacca and the lizard-faced bounty hunter Bossk, and there'll be a few extra weapons, cards and other additions, too.

The most exciting-sounding part of the DLC takes place outside the Death Star, though. As the trailer below suggests, Death Star will feature a recreation of the Battle of Yavin, complete with the unforgettable trench run from A New Hope.

Looking further ahead, EA has also announced the fourth and final piece of DLC for Battlefront, scheduled for release later this year. Called Rogue One: Scarif, it'll be based on the forthcoming spin-off directed by Gareth Edwards; Scarif being the name of the lush tropical planet where much of that film's action is set to take place.

The Death Star DLC is due out in December, while Rogue One: Scarif will follow in December. More news on these as it comes in.

Star Wars: Battlefront - Bespin launch trailer emerges

The next expansion for Star Wars: Battlefront will take to the skies in Bespin - the home of the smooth-talking rogue, Lando Calrissian. The DLC doesn't launch until the 21st June - and non-subscribers will have to wait a further two weeks to play it - but that hasn't stopped EA from putting out a launch trailer.

Very nice it looks too. The promo below shows Lando in action, along with the second new character, Dengar, as well as the other toys we'll get to play with. Check it out...

Star Wars: Battlefront - Bespin DLC out this month

The next content update for Star Wars: Battlefront will take place at Lando Calrissian's sky-high residence, Bespin. Introducing new vehicles and weapons, as well as the chance to play as the smooth-talking Lando or the villainous Dengar, it's set to bring yet another famous location from the Star Wars-verse to Battlefront.

Developer EA DICE also released the image below, and we're guessing that a trailer showing off the Bespin DLC's new stuff will follow along fairly soon. In the meantime, here's a bit of blurb from EA's site:

Join legendary smuggler Lando Calrissian and cold-blooded bounty hunter Dengar in the Cloud City of Bespin. Take to the skies in the new cloud car vehicle and journey through Cloud City and the Administrator’s Palace. The Bespin digital expansion will feature two new blasters to add to your arsenal. No matter your preference of short or long range combat, there will be something new to try out in Cloud City. Hunt enemies within the Bioniip Laboratories or carbon-freezing chambers with the new X-8 Night Sniper and EE-4 blasters.

The Bespin expansion is due out on the 21st June.

Star Wars: Battlefront - Outer Rim trailer

Looking for more things to see, do, shoot and blow up in Star Wars: Battlefront? Then the imminent arrival of the next piece of downloadable content, Outer Rim, might be the update you're looking for. It adds four new maps, plus Greedo and Nien Nunb as additional player characters and a sprinkling of new weapons and explosives.

The expansion's due out in March (that's this month, calendar fans), but to keep you interested until then, here's a new gameplay trailer. As you can imagine, Han Solo and Greedo have some old scores to settle...

Hutt Contracts update teased

EA is still turning out plenty of new content for Star Wars: Battlefront, with the company only recently providing details of its Outer Rim pack - that's the one that will add Greedo and Nien Nunb as player characters.

But a new trailer, advertising Battlefront's forthcoming free game updates, tells us all about something called Hutt Contracts. What are Hutt Contracts? Right now, we've no idea - we just know they have something to do with the fabulously greasy Jabba the Hutt. Look - there's a digital version of him in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo below. Our best guess is that he'll dish out bounty hunting missions, allowing all of us to channel our inner Boba Fett.

The trailer also teases free new maps and co-op missions, as well as lots of new gear. Unfortunately, there's no clue as to when all this lovely stuff will be with us. Until we know more, feast your eyes on the Star Wars: Battlefront footage below...

John Boyega calls for story mode

The lack of a single-player mode in Star Wars: Battlefront was a disappointment to many of us, and now a famous name from the Star Wars universe has added his voice to the clamour for a solo campaign.

John Boyega - who, of course, played Finn in The Force Awakens - took to Twitter to ask EA, "Will fans get a full-on offline story mode? It's more of an enjoyable way to learn controls."

When asked by EA's Star Wars Twitter account custodian whether he'd tried the multiplayer missions, Boyega replied, "Yeah, thought it was great! But definitely leaves you wanting to engage with a narrative. Can I visit your base in the UK?"

While it's extremely unlikely that a single-player campaign will appear in Battlefront at this late stage, there have been rumours that the sequels may include one. Or alternatively, Battlefront's going to be kept as the multiplayer branch of EA's Star Wars games, and that the action game currently being put together by former Uncharted writer-co-director Amy Hennig will give us the solo experience some of us have been waiting for.

In other Battlefront news, EA DICE has formally unveiled its latest chunk of DLC called Outer Rim. This will add three new maps set on Tattooine - Jabba the Hutt's throne room and a sail barge garage - and a factory on Sullust. The big headline grabber is that Outer Rim will add two new characters to play with - Greedo and Nien Nunb. Look - here they come now:

There are also additional guns and a new type of grenade, as well as a new mode called Extraction, which involves a detachment of Rebels trying to get a shipment of useful gear to a transport vessel with the Empire's forces in hot pursuit.

You can read more about Outer Rim at the Star Wars: Battlefront website.

Gamespot,Eurogamer

 Turning Point mode teased

Beautiful looking though it is, Star Wars: Battlefront has received a certain amount of criticism for its relative lack of longevity. What players do have to look forward to, though, is The Battle Of Jakku, a free bit of DLC which takes place before the events of December's The Force Awakens.

In it, Rebels clash with Empire forces in an effort to destroy the latter's base; yesterday, EA DICE wrote a blog post about what we can expect from what it calls the Turning Point mode. With Imperial Star Destroyers and other bits of debris raining down from the sky, it sounds like a dramatic battle to wade into.

But beyond that, what else will Star Wars: Battlefront players have to look forward to? While EA isn't getting into specifics at the moment, it's stated in a new post that, "We have lots of new content coming over the next several months that will provide new ways to immerse yourself in Star Wars."

"Of course, we are also planning to support Star Wars Battlefront with new content well into the future," the post continues. "We will be adding more of what you love about the game, like new maps and Star Cards, for free in the coming months, in addition to all of the content we have coming with Season Pass."

There are no dates for the additional content as yet, but we're sure to hear more after the Battle Of Jakku DLC launches on the 1st December for pre-order customers and the 8th December for mere Padawans.

In the meantime, here's a picture of Boba Fett trying to set fire to Han Solo's arse.

Andy Samberg will send up the doping scandals of cycling in his new series Tour De Pharmacy...

Echoing the career of Will Ferrell, Andy Samberg is currently in his sports comedy phase.

With writer Murray Miller and director Jake Szymanski, Samberg found a fair bit of success last year with the HBO tennis mockumentary 7 Days In Hell. Now, the network has got the team back together to try and repeat the trick.

Samberg, Miller and Szymanski have been given the green light for Tour De Pharmacy, a comedy series based around blood doping in the world of competitive cycling.

TV Line broke the news, as well as confirming some casting information. Daveed Diggs - who shot to stardom recently in the mega-popular Broadway musical Hamilton - has nabbed a starring role alongside Mr Samberg.

Will Forte, Julia Ormond, Phylicia Rashad, Dolph Lundgren, John Cena, Mike Tyson and Nathan Fielder are also among the cast. We assume the particularly muscle-bound people on that list will be among the cyclists.

Samberg, Miller and Szymanski are all acting as producers on the project. We'll let you know as we hear more.

Director Rian Johnson talks about following the plot of Star Wars: The Force Awakens with next year's Episode 8...

Attendees at Star Wars Celebration Europe were lucky enough to be among the first to clap eyes on the second trailer for this year's Star Wars: Rogue One. The rest of us will have to wait an unspecified amount of time before that promo appears on YouTube or in cinemas. Still, the celebration's live feed still provided a few new morsels of information, including the latest Rogue One poster and a sizzle reel containing behind-the-scenes footage and glimpses of a few new characters.

Then there's Star Wars: Episode VIII, the 2017 sequel to The Force Awakens. Writer-director Rian Johnson took ther stage at the Future Film Maker panel to talk about his forthcoming movie, and while he didn't drop anything revelatory - we still don't know what its official title is, for one thing - he did provide a few details which haven't been disclosed before.

When it comes to Episode VIII's story, Johnson revealed that its events will follow on directly from those of The Force Awakens, where Rey met Luke Skywalker on the planet Ahch-To.

"For the first time," Johnson said, "this movie is going to start where the last one left off."

He later added, "That final scene in VII, I want to see what happens next."

In keeping with George Lucas' Star Wars movies, Episode VIII will also take inspiration from classic war films and samurai flicks: two of the films Johnson cited as influences on Episode VIII were 1949's Twelve O'Clock High, about American pilots in World War II, and Three Outlaw Samurai, a chambara movie from 1964.

Episode VIII will also be a darker film than The Force Awakens, which is something we've expected given the distinctly New Hope feel we got from JJ Abrams' revival. "We start zooming in on the characters and getting to the heart of them," Johnson said, "challenging them, and pushing them deeper."

More news on Star Wars' sequels and spin-offs as we get it.

It's official: another Star Trek movie is coming, and Chris Hemsworth is returning to the series...

The new film isn’t out until Friday, but Paramount Pictures has already formally announced a fourth Star Trek movie for the current cast. What’s more, the new film is confirmed to see Chris Hemsworth return as George Kirk (a role he debuted in 2009’s Star Trek).

The new film will not be penned by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung though, with J D Payne and Patrick McKay taking on writing duties this time. JJ Abrams is back to produce, although the announcement from Paramount doesn’t confirm who will be directing the new feature, or when to expect it.

It does note that the core cast will be returning. The role of Chekov, we already know, will not be recast following the tragic death of Anton Yelchin.

As for the plot? Well, the casting of Chris Hemsworth gives a bit of the game away. As the press release notes, “Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father”.

Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt star in the remake of The Magnificent Seven. Here's the new trailer...

Just to prove that remakes are nothing new, John Sturges' The Magnificent Seven was a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai - and in a rare alignment of creativity, they're both brilliant.

Training Day and The Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua's behind the new remake of Sturges' western, which places Chris Pratt, Denzel Washingtonin and five other chaps in the saddle as a group of gunmen defending a village from vicious bandits.

Fuqua will have to work hard to reach the classic heights of the original, but it has to be said that Washington looks very cool with his sideburns and hat.

Here's the new trailer for The Magnificent Seven...

And here's the previous trailer, which arrived online back in April...

The Magnificent Seven is out in UK cinemas on the 23rd September. We'll bring you more news on the film as we hear it.

Star Trek TV series: Netflix buys international rights

The new Star Trek TV series, along with all previous TV shows, will stream on Netflix in the UK and around the world...

Latest

Netflix has bought the international rights to the new Star Trek TV series, reports Deadline. Outside of the US, Netflix will be the official home of the new show in 88 countries including the UK.

Excitingly, the new episodes will be arriving on Netflix within 24 hours of their US premiere it's been confirmed.

And even more excitingly for subscribers who didn't already have access via the streaming service is the news that Netflix has also nabbed the international rights to the entire Star Trek TV back catalogue, including The Original SeriesThe Next Generation, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise.

More on this as it arrives.

Star Trek TV series structure: "one story over thirteen episodes"

Bryan Fuller has been chatting to Collider about his upcoming Star Trek TV series, which is filming this autumn and is believed to be set in the original Trek universe at some point between The Original Series and The Next Generation. (We're awaiting an official confirmation on that bit, though.)

Fuller confirmed on a swanky-looking red carpet that the first season of this new show will consist of 13 episodes. "We’ve got the arc of the first season entirely written, or arced out, and we’ve got the first six episodes entirely broken", he added.

Asked if this would be 'one story over thirteen episodes', Fuller responded with a simple one-word answer: "Yes". So it sounds like this won't be a new planet every week, but rather a 13-part story more fitting to the binge-friendly world of online streaming. (Lest we forget that Fuller's series is heading for CBS' online platform All Access, rather than a traditional TV broadcast.)

"I’ve met with a few actors, and it’s an interesting process", the showrunner said on the topic of casting. "There’s a few people that we like and we want to carry on what Star Trek does best, which is being progressive. So it’s fascinating to look at all of these roles through a colorblind prism and a gender-blind prism, so that’s exciting."

Star Trek TV series: estimated air date

CBS head honcho Len Moonves has revealed that his network’s upcoming Star Trek TV series has quite strict rules about when it can broadcast. After Justin Lin’s big screen movie Star Trek Beyond, CBS must contractually leave at least a six-month gap before broadcasting its own Star Trek material.

Here’s how Moonves described the deal, and how it came to be…

“When [CBS] split from Viacom ten years ago, January 1, 2006, one of the big sticking points, as you can imagine, was Star Trek. You know, we both wanted it. [Paramount] said “It’s a movie!” and I said, “No, no, no, it’s a TV show.” Actually, we’re both right. So they kept the feature film rights, we kept the television rights; they have [Star Trek Beyond] coming out July 22. Our deal with them is that we had to wait six months after their film is launched so there wouldn’t be a confusion in the marketplace.”

Star Trek Beyond reaches cinemas in the UK and the USA on Friday the 22nd of July 2016. So, the absolute earliest that CBS would be allowed to release its Star Trek series would be late January 2017.

We've got loads of info on the new Star Trek TV series on pages 2 and 3 of this article...

Star Trek TV series trailer

You can see the logo for the Star Trek TV show at the top of this page, or you can watch it slowly being unveiled in this teaser clip which promises new crews, new villains, new heroes and new worlds...

Once a proper trailer comes to light, we'll pass it on. That could take a while, though, since the series won't start filming until autumn.

Star Trek TV series: links to the films revealed?

Birth Movies Death is reporting rumours that the new Star Trek TV series will be set in the "original, classic continuity".

"The show will be set some time after the events of Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country, so between the original series and The Next Generation" says the report, concluding "It won't be set in the JJ Abrams reboot universe."

"A trusted source has chimed in and told me that it looks like the show will be a seasonal anthology," says the site.

Between Kirk and Picard then, interesting... Until CBS All Access has something to say on the subject, however, this one stays in the rumour category.

This - the vaguest of vague descriptions - is all that CBS has released through official means thus far...

"The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."

Star Trek TV series: where can you watch it?

In the US, via CBS's All Access streaming service (see the official announcement from StarTrek.com below).

And in all other territories (apart from Canada where it will be on Bell Media) including the UK, it will stream on Netflix.

"CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service. The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International."

It's going to be the first original series developed for streaming service, CBS All Access, which will set subscribers back $5.99 a month in the US.

Star Trek TV series cast rumours: Tony Todd could star

The first casting rumour for CBS' new Star Trek TV show has arrived: Tony Todd (The FlashFinal Destination24, er, lots of other things) has revealed that he's on a "very short [casting] list" for the revival series.

Don't expect to hear more than casting rumours for the foreseeable, according to Todd, as the final official cast won't be completed until the fourth quarter of this year.

Todd's announcement doesn't reveal any character details and the casting is by no means a done deal, but it's enough to get the cogs of speculation whirring...

Star Trek TV series showrunner

Bryan Fuller hasn't exactly kept his desire to bring Star Trek back to television under his stylish hat over the years. When we chatted to him for the launch of Hannibalback in 2013, he reiterated plans to "do something on the Reliant" with "Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson."

"I would love to do that version of the show," Fuller said, "but that’s in the future to be told."

Lo, that future has arrived. CBS has announced that Fuller is returning to his writing roots by co-creating and executive producing its new Star Trek TV show.

Here's what he had to say in the official press blurb:

"My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before."

Fuller will be joining forces with Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness), who is also taking on Executive Producing duties on the new series.

Star Trek TV series writers: Nicholas Meyer signs up

Nicholas Meyer will return to Star Trek to help with writing and producing the new TV series, set to be led by showrunner Bryan Fuller. Mr Meyer is best known for writing Star Trek II: The Wrath Of KhanStar Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, from the classic William Shatner/Leonard Nimoy cinematic era (of those, he also directed II and VI).

Bryan Fuller had this to say about Meyer’s return to Trek:

"Nicholas Meyer chased Kirk and Khan 'round the Mutara Nebula and 'round Genesis' flames. He saved the whales with the Enterprise and its crew, and waged war and peace between Klingons and the Federation. We are thrilled to announce that one of Star Trek's greatest storytellers will be boldy returning as Nicholas Meyer beams aboard the new Trek writing staff."

Visceral's Star Wars game: new concept art and details

Visceral Games' Amy Hennig shares some new details about the developer's upcoming Star Wars game...

During Star Wars Celebration 2016, creative director Amy Hennig took the stage to discuss Visceral Games' upcoming Star Wars action-adventure game. While she didn't reveal any concrete details about the game, which is being kept under wraps at Electronic Arts, Hennig did describe the process of making the game. She also brought some concept art for the game, which you can see below.

When discussing the writing, Hennig said that she was focused on catching the "humour and bouyancy" of a Star Wars tale in the game's script. She also wants to make sure the story has stakes.

Said Hennig, "It means getting the tone right. It's what my writing partner Todd [Stashwick] calls breezy urgency. It's the idea that there's sort of a swash-buckling charm to the thing. There's humor and buoyancy but at the same time there's stakes and jeopardy."

Hennig discussed the creative process behind the untitled Star Wars game:

The reason [we're collaborating with Lucasfilm so closely is] we're writing an original Star Wars story with new characters, locations, tech, creatures, you name it. All of it has to sit authentically alongside the stuff people know now.

The process that I've been using is really similar to what I did with Uncharted, to be honest. If you're trying to re-create that classic—in [Uncharted's] case—pulp action adventure experience, you need to deconstruct the films so you know how to reconstruct them in an interactive context as gameplay.

The end goal is by the time the player has finished playing they feel like they really did play a Star Wars film. So I've done the same thing for Star Wars. What does that mean? It's getting the structure right. It means you have to understand where the act breaks fall, where all the obstacles and reversals fall, and the set-pieces. [You need to know] what are all the component parts that make up a Star Wars story.

Hennig also teased that the game could have an ensemble cast, keeping with Star Wars story tradition:

What I was really eager to discover is what distinguished Star Wars films from the others I'd been studying in the action adventure genre. The first thing that jumped out was these are always ensemble stories ... People would say there's other characters in something like Indiana Jones, but they're side characters. In Star Wars, they're co-protagonists, so if you think about the original trilogy it's as much Leia's, Han's, and Vader's story as it is Luke's.

Think about Star Wars Rebels, that tradition continues now. Think about Rogue One, it's the same thing, and the same thing is true of our game. Part of our deconstruction is to figure out how we enable that in the story and honor it in the gameplay as well. It's not a lone-wolf story because that's not Star Wars. Your characters have to be a coordinated ensemble acting in the moment and in parallel. If you think about the film and the Death Star, they only escape because everybody does their part in parallel.

[Characters are] always outnumbered and outgunned, so they have to be smarter than their enemies, more improvisational, and work together. The challenge for us is to figure out how we enable that in gameplay so that the player really feels that experience, so that it's not just part of the story but also the gameplay. That's why you deconstruct and reconstruct.

The mystery game has been the subject of much speculation. Since Hennig's hiring after her departure from Naughty Dog, it's been speculated that Visceral's game would follow in the tradition of third-person action-adventure games such as Uncharted. Some rumors suggest that the game might be open-world. Nothing concrete has yet been shared about the game, though.

Electronic Arts showed a few seconds of footage from the game during its EA PLAY presentation at E3 2016. The footage wasn't exceptionally revealing, but it did tease that the game would take place during the era of the Empire.

Might a new trailer be edging closer? Here's the latest poster for Marvel's Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch...

Things have been quiet on the Doctor Strange front for a little while, but it's looking like we might get some more details and a new glimpse at the film at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con. Ahead of that, a new poster for the movie has been spotting in the wild. And here's the evidence...

Doctor Strange release date

Doctor Strange will hit UK cinemas on October 28th 2016 and American ones on November 4th.

We'll bring you more news as we hear it. In the meantime, we've got loads of extra information about Doctor Strange on page 2 of this article...

Doctor Strange trailer

Our best look yet at Doctor Strange came in this first trailer, which landed back in April...

You can find our forensic analysis of that trailer by clicking here

The co-writer of the film, C. Robert Cargill described that trailer as "the definition of a teaser" in conversation with The Sunday Service podcast. "You are only getting a like a small taste of just how crazy this movie gets", he added. "We have only just the slightest hints of magic in there. There are major characters you don’t even glimpse in that trailer, there is so much stuff going on, that this thing is just nutty, the stuff they let us do, I can’t believe they let us do it".

Doctor Strange story details: origin story and mystical stuff

Even though Doctor Stephen Strange was name-dropped (implying that he's already on HYDRA/S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar) way back in Marvel Studios' 2014 flick Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it looks like the Doctor Strange movie will cover his origin story.

We've discussed Strange's beginnings at length in a different article, but the basics are easy to get to grips with. Stephen Strange is an arrogant New York surgeon who goes on to become the Sorcerer Supreme of Planet Earth, after a car accident injures his hands to the point that he could no longer perform surgery. In the comics he gained much power and respect, but never lost his snarky attitude.

He learned the magical arts from The Ancient One and formed a fierce rivalry with her former pupil Baron Mordo. Both will appear in the movie, and there's also an as-yet-unnamed villain played by Mads Mikkelsen. Protecting Earth from mystical threats becomes Stephen's day job, and that is bound to take up a large chunk of the movie.

Doctor Strange cast: it's not just Cumberbatch

You'll already know by now that the mighty Mr Benedict Cumberbatch is right at the centre of this movie, playing the eponymous Doctor Strange. He'll bring Sherlock-level snark, for sure, as well as wearing a nice cape.

That's far from the only impressive name among this cast, though. Tilda Swinton is playing the magical mentor figure The Ancient One, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is her former pupil and Strange’s main rival Baron Mordo. Madds Mikkelsen has also been cast, in a nefarious role described as "a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect."

Rachel McAdams will play a former colleague of Strange’s from his surgeon days. She’ll serve as a “lynchpin to his old life, once he steps into the role of a sorcerer". Michael Stuhlbarg (who played Griff in Men In Black 3 and Andy Hertzfeld in last year’s Steve Jobs) is also in the movie, as a rival scientist to Strange called Nicodemus West.

Benedict Wong – recently seen rushing to meet a deadline in The Martian– has been cast as Doctor Strange’s trusty sidekick Wong. In the comics, this Chinese martial arts master/monk was assigned to protect/provide valet services for Strange by The Ancient One.

Amy Landecker from Transparent and Scott Adkins (seen in the Undisputed series and The Expendables 2, known for his martial arts skills) have also been cast, but we don’t know anything about their characters yet.

Doctor Strange: Marvel statement on 'whitewashing' accusation

The positive response to the first trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange movie, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, was tempered a little by questions being asked about the treatment of The Ancient One.

The character is played by Tilda Swinton in the new movie, and in a statement to Mashable, the studio responded to accusations that of “whitewashing”.

The statement in its entirety was shared by Mashable, and it reads like this:

“Marvel has a very strong record of diversity in its casting of films and regularly departs from stereotypes and source material to bring its MCU to life. The Ancient One is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic. We are very proud to have the enormously talented Tilda Swinton portray this unique and complex character alongside our richly diverse cast”.

Doctor Strange crew: Scott Derrickson and co.

Sinister and Deliver Us From Evil director Scott Derrickson (pictured, above left, with Spider-Man actor Tom Holland and Marvel's Louis D’Esposito) directed the film, from a script credited to C. Robert Cargill (SinisterSinister 2), Thomas Dean Donnelly (Sahara, 2011’s Conan The Barbarian), Joshua Oppenheimer (the same as Mr Donnelly) and Jon Spaihts (The Darkest HourPrometheus). We're expecting a mixture of spectacle and scares, then. Marvel Studios overseer Kevin Feige is of course among the producers.

We'll bring you more Doctor Strange news as we hear it.

Star Trek Beyond: one final trailer

The last trailer for Star Trek Beyond has just been released - and you can see it here...

With the film arriving in cinemas on Friday, we've got time for one final trailer for Star Trek Beyond...

Star Trek Beyond: Sulu is Star Trek's first openly gay character

It's been revealed that there's a small scene in Star Trek Beyond where Sulu – played by John Cho in the film – is very briefly seen with a same-sex partner and their daughter.

It’s a very small and understated moment, but one not without significance: Sulu thus becomes the first openly gay character in the Star Trek series, in its 50th birthday year.

The idea reportedly came from co-writer Simon Pegg, and as Cho told the Herald Sun, “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out [of] it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations”.

As such, it’s a brief, non-demonstrative sequence in the film. And the movie quickly moves on.

We’ll have more on Star Trek Beyond in the coming weeks…

Star Trek Beyond release date: UK and USA

Star Trek Beyond - the third film in the rebooted timeline - is due for release in the UK and the USA on Friday 22nd July 2016. It's set to be 120 minutes long.

We've got loads of Star Trek Beyond info on pages 2 and 3 of this article...

Star Trek Beyond cast: newcomers and returnees

The main new addition to the cast is Idris Elba, who'll play a villain by the name of Krall (pictured directly above). Director Justin Lin is particularly enthusiastic about Elba's involvement, he told Collider, "because his character is really challenging the way of The Federation’s philosophy and there’s just a lot of things that I think when I was growing up I wanted to see".

"Simon [Pegg] and the team have written a very interesting, complex journey for my character", Mr Elba told MTV, before adding that "You've never seen me play a character like this. [...] I think Star Trek has prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains. He’s a guy who wants to end the world, there’s no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, there’s a slightly different twist to that".

Kingsman: The Secret Service actress Sofia Boutella has also joined the franchise, as a character named Jaylah. Here's a picture of her on a green screen set with Chris Pine's Captain Kirk...

Shohreh Aghdashloo - who was Oscar-nominated for her role in House Of Sand And Fog, and has been starring in the excellent Syfy series The Expanse recently - has joined the production as well. She was involved in reshoots that took place in early 2016, and is believed to be playing the Federation's High Command.

Of course, the returning cast includes Chris Pine's Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto's Spock, Zoe Saldana's Uhura, Simon Pegg's Scotty, Karl Urban's Bones, Anton Yelchin's Chekov and John Cho's Sulu. Shohreh Aghdashloo's newly-added as-yet-unnamed character is believed to be playing their boss, the High Command of the Federation.

Star Trek Beyond cast: William Shatner rules out cameo

Sadly, given the passing of the great Leonard Nimoy, this will be the first version of the recast Star Trek franchise not to feature a cameo from the legendary Spock actor. Some had thought that William Shatner might appear in his stead, but apparently this isn't the case.

"There was never a conversation", Shatner has told SFX. "It would have been interesting to see what their fertile imaginations could have done with somebody who is 20 years older than when Captain Kirk died [as he did in Star Trek: Generations] and how they would have explained the difference in appearance. But that never came up. I’m sure they must have thought of it one time or another but I never had a substantial conversation about replaying the role".

So, it remains to be seen whether anyone from the original cast will pop up in Star Trek Beyond. It is intended as a 50th anniversary instalment in the franchise, so we expect there will be plenty of nods and winks if not full-blown cameos.

Star Trek Beyond: Simon Pegg on writing the movie

We’re just under three weeks away now from the release of the new Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond. And this time, as you probably know, Simon Pegg isn’t just one of the stars of the movie, he’s its co-writer, along with Doug Jung.

It was a “terrifying responsibility”, Simon Pegg has told The Guardian in a new interview, about co-writing Star Trek Beyond.

But, we suspect, a dream come true too. “Whether it comes across as keenly as we wanted it with all the whiz-bangs of a big science-fiction movie, what we wanted to do was to question the idea of the original vision of it”, Pegg added. “Gene Roddenberry’s original idea of the Federation was like a UN in space. We wanted to ask whether it was a good thing or more like a colonising force”.

The full interview is well worth a read, not least because as Pegg notes, “anything you say these days gets reduced to a clickbait headline”. Thus, we’d, as always, advise you to check out the source of the interview to see his quotes in context. Not that we think we’ve pulled them out of too much context, but still, just to be on the safe side...

The Guardian.

Star Trek Beyond director: Justin Lin

As J.J. Abrams was too busy making Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Justin Lin of Fast & Furious 5 and stepped into helm Star Trek Beyond. Here he is, pictured with two new aliens...

Lin told Collider that he "wanted to hopefully create an opportunity or a situation where we really see how they [the Enterprise crew] react to things and to each other".

He continued: "Those are things that even in all the years of watching Trek we had hundreds of hours with the movies of stuff with engagement, but in this timeline I wanted to hopefully create something where we can be on the five-year mission, we can hopefully explore and push, and introduce new species, and put them in situations where hopefully it then mirrors back and reflects about the exploration of humanity.”

Of new director Justin Lin, Sulu actor John Cho said that he “cared about the mythology, he cared about the world, he cared about getting it right, he cared about moving the characters forward”

“I think we all had question marks”, Cho admitted of the change in director on the new movie. “It’s tough to be told that the guy you made two successful movies with [JJ Abrams] isn’t going to be helming the third one. But we were all just really pleasantly surprised as we eased into working with him”.

Star Trek Beyond writers: Simon Pegg and more

Star Trek Beyond's script was written by Simon Pegg, Doug Jung, Roberto Orci, John D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Mr Pegg said this to Collider about trying to pen a Star Trek script that gets the balance of old and new just right:

"I have to abide by certain rules and do right by the original series, and not be too post-modern with it and not be too aware of itself. I have to try to take on the spirit of the show, rather than fill it with stuff that people will just go 'oh, yeah, that’s from episode something or other'. It’s more than that".

“It’s been such a huge deal, this thing,” Pegg has said. “Getting to write a Star Trek film and the task that lay ahead of us in terms of what we had to do was daunting and stressful at times, but it became enormous fun”, he said. “Once we got back together with the gang and putting it on film and seeing what Justin was doing, and I can’t wait for people to see it”.

“Being given the keys to the Star Trek universe was an extraordinary privilege. It was extremely important to me that we did it justice”, he added.

"In terms of balancing the show’s long-term fan base with those new to Star Trek", he argued “let’s combine it. Let’s combine the philosophies and tenets of the Star Trek universe with bigger set pieces and exciting stuff”.

“Let’s see Kirk and the guys doing stuff we haven’t seen them do before because we just literally haven’t been able to do that. But that’s not at the expense of the other stuff. Star Trek is a very thoughtful story. It’s a very intelligent, hopeful projection of our own futures, and that’s something we have to hang on to”.

You'll find more Star Trek Beyond stuff on page 3 of this article...

Star Trek Beyond miscellanea: "we had the entirety of Star Trek at our disposal"

Co-writer Simon Pegg was talking about the film at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas in April, and he told Coming Soon that a fan-driven online resource was invaluable in putting the screenplay together.

"We had the entirety of Star Trek history at our disposal and it’s always there online", he said. "There’s an amazing wiki online called Memory Alpha. It became Doug and my resource and the place that we’d turn to whenever we wanted to know ‘what kind of weapons does an NX vessel carry?’ Memory Alpha has it".

A strong hint that there's an NX vessel in the new Star Trek film, for a start.

"We actually wrote to the Memory Alpha guys and got them to name a certain device in the movie. I sent them a letter saying, ‘can you come up with this for me?’ In two hours, they came back with an entire etymological history of what the thing was. It’s beautiful. It’s fantastic to have that support network".

Pegg also confirmed that the new film won't follow the path set by Star Trek: The Search For Spock in continuing on from Star Trek Into Darkness. "There might be a little nod for fans perhaps, but it's certainly not something that the film depends on or has any relationship to the plot of the previous Star Trek III"

Star Trek future: what's next?

Development is already underway on Star Trek 4, the sequel to Star Trek Beyond. It's very early days at the moment, but Paramount has taken the first step by registering the title Star Trek 4 with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

There's also a brand new Star Trek TV series - from Bryan Fuller - coming in 2017.  The show will be its own thing, though, free from the continuity of the new movies. CBS has to wait six months after Star Trek Beyond's premiere before airing it, due to contractual reasons.

We'll keep you updated with the latest Star Trek Beyond news as we hear it.

Mouse Guard is heading to the movies

David Petersen’s Mouse Guard is heading to the big screen, with help from Matt Reeves and Gary Whitta...

Mouse Guard, David Petersen‘s Eisner-winning comic book series, will be adapted for the big screen by Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes director Matt Reeves and Gary Whitta, who wrote the screenplay for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

20th Century Fox optioned the best-selling series, which will be produced by Reeves alongside Boom! Studios’ Ross Richie and Stephen Christy. Reeves has not yet said whether he will direct.

Created, written and illustrated by Petersen, Mouse Guard follows a brotherhood of anthropomorphic mice living in medieval times.

"Let me tell ye about the Guard,” it says in the book. “We mice have little chance in this world, considering all the critters that eat us. We know how to build our cities hidden and protected; deep within rock outcroppings, in tangled root, and beneath loamy soil. We survive. But how do we live? Travel in the open between our towns is dangerous. The Guard has been in existence longer than our history. They are the trail blazers, the guides, the escorts, and defenders of us."

Mouse Guard recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Petersen previously revealed on the series official website that he wanted a film adaptation “to be done correctly”. He wanted the move to stay true to the series' all-ages material. Fox plans to use the technology pioneered for Planet Of The Apes for a live-action/CG hybrid film via performance capture.

Whitta is best known for writing The Book Of Eli. Reeves is currently in post-production on War For the Planet Of The Apes, which is set to hit cinemas next year.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote casting update

Willem Dafoe and Stellan Skarsgard have been cast in Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote...

Though no announcement has yet been issued to the trades, there's now solid word on the casting of Willem Dafoe and Stellan Skarsgard in Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote coming right from the source: the website of one of the companies actually backing the production.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is a modern-day story which Don Quixote appears to be alive and well and reliving the same story all over again, just with a slightly different supporting cast this time.

We know already that Adam Driver will be playing Toby Grossini, the lead character and Sancho Panza stand-in, and that Michael Palin has been cast as Quixote, the Man of La Mancha himself. Olga Kurylenko is onboard too, playing a role that was, I think, once earmarked for Cameron Diaz. From what I'd know of the script - I've read older drafts, but know Gilliam and Tony Grisoni have been revising - I'd guess that Dafoe will be playing that character's husband. He's not a very nice man (the husband, not Dafoe).

Skarsgard, if I were to hazard a guess, might just be in the dual roles of a commercials director and an innkeeper. Or perhaps he's Maritornes, a character derived from the original Cervantes. Or maybe not any of those. It's hard to know how Gilliam might be visualising his screenplay. If I could see things the way Gilliam does... well, I'd probably just sit staring at the pictures in my head all day, chuckling.

Production on The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is expected to start towards the end of the year. All signs are incredibly positive for this film, despite the decade of Bad Omens pinned onto this film by superstition, bad reporting and sheer crappy luck. Remember kids: there's no such thing as a curse and luck really doesn't exist, per se. Expect to see Gilliam get it all wrapped up and ready to screen at Cannes next year, then rolling out in cinemas soon afterwards.

At least, I hope so. I for one feel like I've waited half a lifetime for this film already, and have been impatient for pretty much every day of that.

Keanu review

Published Date
Tuesday, July 19, 2016 - 05:39

The first movie from the team behind Comedy Central's Key & Peele sets itself apart from most action comedies in its prologue, in which an adorable grey kitten scampers through the slo-mo crossfire of a bloody warehouse massacre like he's the hero of a John Woo movie. Unlike so many genre parodies of its kind, Keanu actually captures the style of its subject. It only gets more impressive when it mixes in some authentic-looking Michael Mann too.

The cat then runs all the way to Rell (Jordan Peele), a heartbroken layabout who's recently been dumped by his girlfriend. Keanu the kitten brightens up Rell's life considerably, much to the relief of his strait-laced cousin Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key). Their happiness is short-lived when Rell's home is targeted by burglars looking for his drug-dealing neighbour (Will Forte) and they've catnapped the only one who was at home.

While Clarence's family is away for the weekend, the pair go looking for the beloved cat, only to discover that Keanu has some unexpectedly complex connections within Los Angeles' criminal underworld and it seems like every bad guy in the city wants to get hold of him too. Posing as the fearsome Allentown Boys (also played by Key and Peele) and trading on their reputation, Rell and Clarence go to extreme lengths to recover the kitty.

It's a slightly thin premise for a movie and certainly we've seen this sort of comedy, in which two nerds bullshit their way through a dangerous situation, many times before, but you'll be surprised at how well the chemistry between Key and Peele covers up any shortcomings in the story. Even if their transition to the big screen isn't smooth in every regard, watching these two together in a movie is like seeing Simon Pegg and Nick Frost go from Spaced to Shaun Of The Dead - you'll come away from Keanu wanting to see more movies with them in the future.

They both have to be versatile for this to work as well as it does. Key starts out as the straight man to Peele's shiftless stoner, but when Rell is galvanised by the furry McGuffin and becomes more of a lead, Clarence gets more and more frazzled as he ventures further outside of his comfort zone. The tough voices that they adopt give way to panic attacks and sobbing just as soon as they're alone and the sheer energy of their performances elevates the material just as much as the visuals.

Director Peter Atencio is a long-time collaborator with the duo and his work here, referencing Woo's slow motion and Mann's views of LA at night, is stellar. The movie has all of the pop culture savvy of the sketch show, distilled into a cliché-busting riposte to a whole bunch of tropes. The movie posters on Rell's bedroom wall, ranging from Heat and New Jack City to Cloud Atlas and Edge Of Tomorrow, typify the cine-literacy that Atencio and writers Peele and Alex Rubens have brought to the table.

Then again, it also wanders slap-bang into as many clichés as it subverts. Clarence is anxious that his wife (an underserved Nia Long) is going to sleep with a family friend (a spectacularly slimy Rob Huebel) while she's away. Rell's ex-girlfriend is called every bad name under the sun, but there's never any context given. And of course, if you're playing Hollywood comedy bingo at home, a scene of accidental drug-taking should give you a full house.

It doesn't all hang together especially well, and the main casualty of the pacing is the kitten, who isn't on screen enough. But there are a lot of big laughs here, many of them coming from the George Michael-heavy soundtrack. Rell favours NWA, but Clarence is evangelical about the better half of Wham to the point of educating a gang of hardened criminals about the universal qualities of Father Figure while they sit in a getaway car, which Key turns into the height of hilarity.

But finally, it's refreshing to see a comedy that doesn't overdo the cameos. From Ab Fab to Zoolander 2, many of this year's comedies have wheeled out celebs playing themselves for the heck of it. In contrast, Keanu has two excellent cameos, one of them somewhat inevitable and the other coming as a complete surprise because of the way in which it's presented, as a gradual reveal over the course of an outrageous setpiece going on at the same time as Clarence's musical seminar to the gang. They're no less necessary than those of other films, but they're precise and very, very funny.

Keanu is a one-joke movie, but that joke has infinite punchlines and pay-offs throughout this sometimes sketchy but always endearing comedy. It's a little hit and miss, but it's hoisted into more cinematic territory by Atencio's assured direction.
