At this rate, if Ryan Reynolds gets to the big screen once more as Deadpool, it’ll be a minor miracle. Yet a new director might just be greasing the wheels…
There's a bit of us that thinks that the Deadpool movie, if it was going to happen, would have headed somewhere close to production right now. As it stands, it's in danger of suffering a fate close to that of X-Men Origins: Magneto, a film that was long-mooted, yet ultimately dropped in favour of more viable projects.
It was off the back of his appearance as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine that Ryan Reynolds confirmed he was to reprise the role in a fresh spin-off of his own. Then Reynolds' career deservedly starting to burgeon, then he got cast as The Green Lantern, then Warner Bros was interesting in a Green Lantern 2, and then lots of other films starting vying for his attention.
Deadpool, it appeared, was dropping down the list.
Yet, it gained traction once more when Robert Rodriguez was heavily linked with the director's chair of the film. And while we don't think that Rodriguez ever signed on the dotted line, he was certainly in negotiations to bring Deadpool to the big screen once more.
But now, it appears, he's not. For the Los Angeles Times is reporting that Fox has turned its attention to a Swedish commercial director by the name of Adam Berg. Berg has been garnering attention for short film he made for Philips Electronics by the name of Carousel, and crucially, both the studio and Ryan Reynolds are reported to be keen on him for the job.
There are still problems facing a Deadpool movie, not least Ryan Reynolds' upcoming schedule. But at least here there's some sign of movement if a director for the project can finally be confirmed.
