Indiana Jones – in 3D?

Indiana Jones

Following in the footsteps of the Star Wars franchise, there are rumours that Lucasfilm is planning to re-release the Indiana Jones series in 3D…

"Because I'm a writer-director-editor-producer," George Lucas states on Lucasfilm's website, "I'm very comfortable working in the medium the way a painter or a sculptor would. You basically put on a layer and then another layer, then you step back and look at it and put on another layer."

In other words, George Lucas loves to tinker with his old films.

Having already added a "layer" of CG to his original Star Wars trilogy back in the 90s, Lucas has since decided to re-release all six Star Wars movies in 3D, with The Phantom Menace set to return to cinemas in 2012.

According to a story of the Blue Sky Disney blog, which comes to us via Bleeding Cool, Lucas also intends to release the Indiana Jones films in 3D as well. The site claims that Lucasfilm will formally announce the news next month.

While we certainly welcome the chance to see the Indiana Jones movies on the big screen again - and Raiders Of The Lost Ark surely ranks among the greatest action adventure movies of all time - the thought of Lucasfilm tinkering with the franchise fills us with a faint sense of dread.

Regardless of the quality of the 3D conversion (which we hope will be top notch), we're praying that Lucas leaves the films otherwise untouched.

Well, he could perhaps tone down Kate Capshaw's screaming in The Temple Of Doom...
