Warner Bros wants Inception 2?

Is Warner Bros really asking about a possible sequel to Inception? Or is this just the Internet gossip machine at work? Or both…?

You've got to love a bit of web gossip, and the folks over at What's Playing have been chatting to their source at Warner Bros of late and have thrown up an interesting little nugget in the process.

For, if said source is to be believed, Warner Bros is keen to push forward on a sequel to Inception. This, to be fair, would be fairly obvious if you sit down to think about it. From a 100% business point of view, Inception has made over $810m at the box office worldwide thus far, and it's set to make a fair chunk of change when the DVD and Blu-ray rolls around in December.

However, it makes little sense from a story point of view. Appreciating that there's the opportunity to explore a narrative of people using similar techniques, the ending to the first film - whether you liked it or not - pretty much closed off the idea of an Inception 2.

What's Playing's source says that "Warner Bros want another Inception - as in sequel. Doesn't make a lick of sense creatively, but financially? well... it made ‘a lot' of money for them. Can't imagine [Christopher] Nolan wanting to do a sequel, let alone direct one. Also don't imagine Jeff would want to piss off Nolan by doing one around him. All interest is on the studio side at this stage. We shall see comrade...".

And therein lies the reason that Inception 2 won't happen. It'd be a genuine shock if Christopher Nolan wanted to make it, and without him, Warner Bros wouldn't do it. It has too much to lose by getting Nolan's back up, given that his workload for the next few years is overseeing new Batman and Superman films. And our strong suspicion is that the first Inception movie is the only one you'll be getting.

Rightly so, too.

Here's the report over at What's Playing.
