The villain in the next Spider-Man film looks to have been determined: is Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man about to fight Rhys Ifans’ The Lizard?
Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Mr Rhys Ifans was signing on the dotted line to play the villain in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. At that point, Sony was keeping mum about just who the villain would be, although that didn't stop the Internet rising up into a mass ball of speculation. It's good like that.
However, it might just be that we have our answer.
Over at The Wrap, the site is breaking the news that Ifans will be playing Dr Curt Connors, who ultimately becomes The Lizard. This was the role that Dylan Baker took in Spider-Man 2 and 3, even though we never saw him get to the stage where he became a villain. Instead, he played Dr Connors, and the thinking was that eventually he would - in a future Spidey instalment - take on the role of The Lizard himself. The decision to reboot the franchise meant that's not going to happen.
Instead, it's going to be Ifans' job to realise The Lizard, putting pay to rumours that Venom may return to be the Spider-Man reboot villain. Ifans joins a cast that includes Andrew Garfield as the webslinger, and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.
