Explosive multiplayer trailer arrives for Homefront

Kaos Studios’ forthcoming US invasion FPS Homefront gets a new multiplayer, filled with urban combat, explosions, and squashed teddy bears…

2027. America’s heartland quakes to the sound of invading Greater Korean Republic tanks, their tracks rumbling roughshod over cracked tarmac and teddy bears.

But while the rest of the nation sinks to its knees, a small group of resistance fighters isn’t taking the occupation lying down and, despite overwhelming odds, ready themselves to take the country back.

So goes the plot for Kaos Studios’ forthcoming FPS, Homefront, a game that aims to marry realistic combat with a futuristic war of attrition.

If the scenario sounds uncannily like the 20th highest grossing movie of 1984, Red Dawn, in which the US is invaded by Cuban and Soviet forces, that’s because Homefront was written by John Milius, who also wrote the screenplay for that 80s action movie and films such as Apocalypse Now, Conan The Barbarian and Clear And Present Danger.

The latest Homefront trailer shows off its 32-player online mode, and very convincing it looks too, comprising a mixture of infantry-based urban warfare and explosive vehicular combat.

The clip’s accompanying press release exhorts us to “join a cast of memorable characters as your resistance cell wages a guerrilla war against overwhelming military odds in the name of Freedom.”

We hope one of those memorable characters is a videogame rendering of Walter Sobchak out of The Big Lebowski, whose ranting persona the Coen brothers reportedly based on John Milius. At the very least, it would be fantastic to be able to ride into battle with immortal lines such as “You are entering a world of pain!” ringing in our ears…

Homefront is due for release in 2011 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
