25 years on from Back To The Future, director Robert Zemeckis is returning to the time travel film with a new picture called Timeless…
As Back To The Future makes a triumphant return to cinemas in celebration of its quarter-century milestone, director Robert Zemeckis is reportedly returning to the theme of temporal travel for a new feature called Timeless.
His first live action feature since 2000's Cast Away (his previous three films, The Polar Express, Beowulf and A Christmas Carol, were computer-generated), Timeless has been described as a "big tent pole picture" by Deadline, and will be written by Mike Thomas, the screenwriter behind the little-seen 2002 Kevin Costner movie Dragonfly and the 2009 Jennifer Anniston/Aaron Eckhart romantic drama, Love Happens.
Having directed the out-and-out classic that is Back To The Future and its sequels, Zemeckis' decision to make another time travel-themed movie is a brave one. Regardless of plot or genre, it will inevitably be compared to those earlier movies by viewers and critics alike.
Meanwhile, Deadline has also reported that Zemeckis is thought to be currently in the running to direct The Man Of Steel for producer Christopher Nolan.
This is, of course, a mere rumour at this stage, with Zemeckis a mere name on a long list that includes such big Hollywood names as Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, Duncan Jones and Zack Snyder. And not a likely one, we'd wager.
Nevertheless, the prospect of seeing Zemeckis return to the live action fold after a decade of CG is an exciting one. Exact details of Timeless' script and Zemeckis' status as director of the Superman reboot are currently unclear, but if the situation changes on either of those projects, we'll be sure to let you know.
