Hotel Transylvania 2 is pressing ahead - but without director Genndy Tartakovsky on board...

The trio of horror-tinged animated movies this autumn has proven something of a treat, with Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman and Frankenweenie all competing for arguably the same pot of cash.

Inevitably, the weakest film won at the box office. Whereas ParaNorman and Frankenweenie were both excellent in different ways, and were risky and bold, Hotel Transylvania played things a lot, lot safer. It wasn’t terrible, but you can’t help but feel there was a much, much better film to be made out of the assorted ingredients.

Still, there’s no arguing with hard cash, and the movie’s take of $140m in the US and $270m in total has triggered a follow-up. Sony is now lining up Hotel Transylvania 2 for release in 2015.

There’s a significant change in personnel for the second film, though. Whilst presumably the voice talent of Adam Sandler and his chums will be firmly in place, director Genndy Tartakovsky is instead going to make the animated return of Popeye for Sony instead. Popeye is set for release on September 26th 2014, not a million miles away from the release slot of Hotel Transylvania.

When we find out who’s directing Hotel Transylvania 2, we’ll let you know…
