The tragic death of director Tony Scott earlier in the year has made this story pretty much inevitable, but it now seems as though the planned sequel to Top Gun won’t be happening. Scott had been developing the film, with Tom Cruise, as a future directorial project. It was widely assumed that his death would see Top Gun 2 quietly shelved, and according to the New York Times, that’s the case. The film will not be happening.
Paramount is now apparently trying to decide what to do with the planned 3D re-release of the original film, which was being lined up as a primer for the subsequent Top Gun 2. Tony Scott had been, again, actively involved in the 3D work on Top Gun, and the conversion is all but ready to go. Currently, the rumour is that the studio will release Top Gun 3D early in 2013 (the New York Times suggests February), but no formal plans have been announced.
When we hear more, we’ll let you know. It still feels like such a shock, and tragedy, that Tony Scott isn’t with us any more, though.
