It’s been a while since we reported on any film getting any kind of post-production 3D bolt-on, so seemingly commonplace has the practice become with big movies. But we thought it might be worth talking about 3D being added to Zack Snyder’s forthcoming Superman reboot, Man Of Steel, for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, Warner Bros has sent out a big press release trumpeting the fact. In it, Zack Snyder is quoted as saying the following: “The film is going to be a visually exciting experience in all formats: 2D, 3D and IMAX. Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow Man Of Steel to captivate those movie goers, while respecting fans who prefer a more traditional cinematic experience. We’ve taken great measures to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement”.
This makes it sound as if 3D was at least planned for, and the tone of Snyder’s statement – again, at least how it reads to us – seems designed to head off the traditional complaints about post-production 3D bolt-ons.
Secondly, and perhaps the most interesting factor, is that Christopher Nolan, who is producting Man Of Steel, vocally resisted 3D for his Batman films, having been critical of the technology. We suspect he’s much less hands on here, of course. Had he been directing Man Of Steel, we’d strongly wager that the 3D release wouldn’t be happening.
Man Of Steel is due in cinemas on June 14 2013.
