Starz has hired Ronald D Moore to pen their Outlander adaptation, one of many historical fiction projects in the channel’s pipeline…

In the run-up to his work on I, Robot 2, bearded sci-fi wonder Ronald D. Moore of Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek fame is to pen a TV adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling Outlander novels.

The Outlander series (known as Cross Stitch here in the UK) tells the story of a young WWII nurse who finds herself mysteriously transported back in time a couple of centuries whilst holidaying in Scotland. For the uninitiated, its lead characters are Jamie and Claire, a kind of Bella and Edward for eighteenth century Scottish historical fantasy if you like (but with the names of a nice couple you might encounter at a PTA meeting).

The series’ combination of action, romance and historical, fantasy, science fiction seems like a great match for Moore, who learned his trade writing for The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, before heading up Carnivale and the deservedly popular Battlestar Galactica reboot.
