Was Guillermo del Toro offered the chance to direct the Superman reboot? Plus: Jon Hamm reveals he’s not been approached for the role, nor does he expect to be…
Work continues on Warner Bros' plans to reboot its Superman movie franchise once more, with Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer beavering away on a script that's ultimately being overseen by Christopher Nolan. And a couple of little bits of news surrounding the project have surfaced over the weekend.
Firstly, Deadline is reporting that the mighty Guillermo del Toro was offered the chance to direct the new movie. Most of the directorial speculation surrounding Superman has centred on Jonathan Nolan, with the idea being that he'd make his directorial debut on the project. But it appears that Warner Bros immediately approached del Toro after he left The Hobbit job earlier this year.
Del Toro turned the job down in favour of pursuing his adaptation of H P Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness (with James Cameron producing). And while he wasn't drawn on the subject in a new interview over at Deadline, the site seems very sure of its sources (and rarely gets these sort of stories wrong too, to be fair). You can read more on that here.
Meanwhile, the latest round of speculation that Mad Men's Jon Hamm would be cast as the Man Of Steel has been underplayed by the man himself. Talking to the Toronto Sun, Hamm reveals that he's not been approached about the film, adding, "I don't know, I think unless Superman's power was the power of being really old... I may be aged out of that competition."

Superman is currently set to return to the big screen at the end of 2012. More news, of course, as we get it...
