This story contains a spoiler for Wanted. A big one.
Wanted 2 has been on the cards since the first was a surprise box office hit, although there was some uncertainty as to who from the original would be involved. But now it seems as though director Timur Bekmambetov is returning, as are screenwriters Derek Haas and Michael Brandt. With a book to promote, Haas was asked about Wanted 2, here's what he had to say about it:
“After the first movie came out, we were supposed to write the sequel. For various reasons, we didn't connect with what Universal wanted to do creatively. A little bit of what Timur wanted to do. So we just sort of bowed out gracefully.”
However, that wasn't the end of the story. “We got that call you always love as a screenwriter. 'Can you guys please come back?' We loved the world. The experience was great. We said, 'well here's what we want to do with the sequel.' and they said, 'Okay.'
Haas also discussed the liklihood of Angelina Jolie returning:
“Angelina Jolie gets shot in the head and everyone's like, 'Oh, are you going to bring back fox?' I said, 'Did you see the bullet go into her head? And they say, 'Oh, she can take one of those milk baths!' We never wanted to do that movie.”
Haas revealed that the new film will see James McAvoy's character four years later, this time recruiting a young woman who was basically in the position he was in when we met him in the first film.
