Two years in development and with a sizeable $10 million price tag, NBC’s Mockingbird Lane would be a pricy venture to shut down and chalk up to experience, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s the fate it’s up against.
Starring Jerry O’Connell as Herman Munster, Arrested Development’s Portia de Rossi as wife Lily, and Eddie Izzard as the family’s vamp Grandpa, Mockingbird Lane isn’t a low-profile remake of the sixties comedy by anyone’s standards, but it’s one that faces being scrapped if reports are to be believed.
Disagreements about the visual style of the pilot - whether Mockingbird Lane should have a real-world or heightened, fantasy feel - have scuppered progress on the remake, as have differing opinions between producer Bryan Fuller (Star Trek: Voyager, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies) and pilot director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men), in addition to NBC’s change in chairman during the past two years.
Recently ordered reshoots didn’t solve the show’s problems, and with Mockingbird Lane’s writer-producer Fuller occupied with NBC’s The Silence Of The Lambs project Hannibal, The Munsters reboot is drifting in TV limbo. Possible futures for the pilot include airing as a Halloween special, or being repackaged as a TV movie for overseas markets.
