Earlier this year, it was revealed that Universal was reportedly set to press ahead with a reboot of Van Helsing. The first film, directed by Stephen Sommers, was something of a muddled CG festival, that took a decent amount of cash, but hardly made it to anyone’s favourite DVD shelf. The reboot, however, instantly gained some interest when Tom Cruise was revealed to be circling the film.
Furthermore, the movie is being developed by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fringe), alongside the reboot of The Mummy franchise.
Van Helsing, though, might be moving forward quicker. The latest news on the film is that it may just have a director, with Rupert Sanders apparently lined up for the job. Sanders directed this year’s Snow White And The Huntsman, before departing the sequel/spin-off to that movie for more than one reason.
Twitch Film now reports that Sanders is in “early and still relatively casual” discussions about directing Van Helsing. He might have to make his mind up soon, though. Tom Cruise is currently filming All You Need Is Kill, but when he’s done with that, it looks as though Van Helsing might just be his next film. That suggests it will go into production next year.
