Finally, a good two years after it was released in the UK, Joe Dante's The Hole, is going an American cinema release. It's a really good movie, one that's struggled to get US distribution, and it finally arrives on 28th September in cinemas, before its disc and VOD release a few days later.
As a result of the film's release, Joe Dante has been doing some interviews, and when he spoke to Bloody Disgusting, the question of Gremlins 3 came up. Much of what Dante said is familiar, given that his position on the project has barely changed over the years. But there's a bit of new info in here.
Confirming that he's still had no talks with Warner Bros about a Gremlins reboot, or Gremlins 3, Dante admitted that "I think they’d probably reboot the whole thing and start all over or go in a different direction – take the Gremlins someplace else".
"I know that people have gone in with pitches, but nothing has caught their eye", he said. "But I’m not positive that it’s entirely Warner Brothers’ decision. Because it’s an Amblin project, it probably has to be signed off on by Spielberg". Amblin is, of course, Spielberg's company. Or one of them, anyway.
Dante remains of the view that there will be a new Gremlins film at some point, although what it turns out to be is a different question. He'd be interested, too, if getting involved. "Gremlins has been very good to me!", he said.
The full Bloody Disgusting piece is here. And do check out The Hole if you can. It's well worth it, and if lots of people go to see it, people might just give the mighty Joe Dante money to go and make lots more films. Here's hoping.
