New trailer and vague release date arrive for The Last Guardian

The wait’s almost over for Team ICO’s The Last Guardian, as a new trailer and estimated time of release appear…

For many PlayStation 3 owners, the promise of Team ICO’s follow-up to Shadow Of The Colossus was one of the major reasons they bought Sony’s console in the first place.

For what has felt like aeons, we had little more to go on than an odd picture of what appeared to be a drain with a chain emerging from it. Then, in 2009, we got our first proper look at what turned out to be The Last Guardian, a game that appears to blend the best elements of Shadow Of The Colossus and designer Fumito Ueda’s earlier ICO.

A year later, and we now have another trailer to feast our eyes on. Displaying a far higher level of detail than it did a year ago, Ueda’s distinctive visual style is immediately in evidence, and displays the same diffuse lighting and desolate architecture that marked out the designer’s earlier work.

Quietly setting aside the fact that this new trailer’s music is absolutely hideous (it sounds like the incidental theme to a romantic comedy), it’s the potentially fascinating partnership between the game’s youthful protagonist and Trico, a huge, griffin-like creature that has us looking forward to the release of The Last Guardian with itchy thumbs.

Distressingly, our thumbs will have to wait – the trailer concludes with the words “Holiday 2011”, which means we have an entire year to go before we’re likely to be able to try The Last Guardian for ourselves. Until then, we’ll have to make do with the footage you see below, which we’ll watch repeatedly while jabbing at the buttons of our PS3 controllers. Team ICO, you’re too cruel…
