The fan-made Half Life redeux using the Source engine, Black Mesa, has finally been released…

Available now, the Half Life remake, Black Mesa, which weighs in at around 3GB is a visually spruced up version of the original title that makes the most of the enhancements made possible by the Source engine’s inclusion. It also features new voice acting and other tweaks to refine the game, making it a more modern experience.

In this initial release, the team has decided to remove the heavily-reviled Xen portions of the game, and is working to recreate this section as a much more fleshed-out and worthy ending to the Valve shooter. Let’s hope they remove the downright terrible bounce-jump platforms sections at the very least.

Winning one of the first spots in Valve’s Steam Greenlight program, the project has been very highly anticipated by fans, and the lengthy development is a testament to the devotion of the HL fan coders that have worked very hard to bring the release to this point. And, with more revisions planned, including the aforementioned Xen updates, Half Life die hards now have a new hit of Mr Freeman to help tide over their hunger pangs until Valve eventually releases Half Life 3.

You can get Black Mesa from the official website, the link to which you’ll find below.
