James Cameron is planning a small screen follow-up to his 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger hit, True Lies, it’s been confirmed…
I can't help but doubt that we'll ever see James Cameron as a movie director ever letting his hair down again in quite the way he did with his 1994 hit, True Lies. The film, the last to unite him with Arnold Schwarzenegger, was an action comedy that for some time was rumoured to be kick-starting a franchise.
Certainly sequel talk went on for some time, although, in the end, Cameron himself nixed it post-9/11, saying at the time, "Terrorism is no longer something to take as lightly as we did in the first one. I just can't see it happening given the current world climate..
True to his word, Cameron crossed True Lies 2 off his list of projects, instead spending the decade putting together Avatar. But it seems that True Lies has returned to the front of his mind, only this time as a television project.
It's familiar territory for television, of course, having a pair of married spies. In fact, JJ Abrams is just about to launch Undercovers for NBC, which doesn't look a million miles away from the same subject area. And Chuck is gleefully referencing as many 80s and 90s movies as it can, as it continues to sit within the spy-with-a-double-life sub-genre.
The True Lies television project, according to Deadline, is set to be a joint project between 20th Century Fox TV and Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment. Cameron is down to produce the show, with René Echevarria, of The 4400 fame, down as showrunner. The project is about to be shopped around the TV networks in the US, and we'd be surprised if there wasn't a buyer.
We'll keep you posted as to how things develop. In the meantime, here's the story at Deadline.
