If you’d like to know who’s playing the villain in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, their identity has been revealed…

As anticipation builds for Doctor Who series seven following last week’s marvellous trailer (you can read our scientific analysis of this here), some unexpected and quite exciting news about this winter’s Christmas special has turned up.

According to Bleeding Cool, the villain of the piece will be none other than Richard E Grant. The BBC, it seems, anticipated that Grant’s identity wouldn’t stay secret for long, so the news was announced via the official Doctor Who Twitter feed. Grant has some history in Time Lord lore, as Who fans will probably already know; he provided the Doctor’s voice for a 2003 animated webcast, and also appeared in a Comic Relief sketch called Doctor Who And The Curse Of Fatal Death back in 1999.

Exactly who Grant will play hasn’t been revealed yet, but we do know that Tom Ward (of Silent Witness fame) will also appear in the episode, and also that the festive special will mark the debut of the Doctor’s new companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman.

More news on the Christmas special and the rest of Doctor Who series seven as we get it.
