“Instant awesome movies. No strings attached” is the flirtatious promise from Sky’s NOW TV, a new internet TV service that, handily, makes Sky movie content available to anyone in the UK with a broadband or 3G connection, without the need to be a Sky subscriber or have a satellite dish.
At present, the service is limited to films, including new-to-DVD movies such as Chronicle, The Artist, and The Woman in Black (the likes of which will set you back £3.49 pay-as-you-go), as well as older releases like Cloverfield and Iron Man, available for £1.99 each.
The plan is for Sky Sports to join the package in the near future, shortly followed by TV shows from Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts and Sky Living. If your broadband connection’s up to it then, hopefully that will eventually mean a way for UK viewers without Sky dishes to see new series of Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Modern Family, and Veep, etc.
Launching tomorrow, there are two ways of going about accessing NOW TV, the first a £15-a-month unlimited pass (which comes with the first 30 days free and provides access to around 600 films), and the second a pay-as-you-go option giving access to over 1,000 movies.
To begin with, you’ll be able to stream movies on PCs, Macs and selected Android phones, but Sky is planning to roll the service out to include iPhone, Xbox, PS3, and the Sir Alan Sugar-backed YouView in the coming months. If any of that tickles your fancy, you can find out more here.
