Given that a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man has already been announced, and has a release date set for the summer of 2014, what we're about to tell you isn't going to come as much of a surprise. But it's now been officially confirmed for the first time that the plan with this particular reboot is for a trilogy of films, with Andrew Garfield starring.
That points to a possible summer 2016 release for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, if the current rate of production is kept up, by which time Garfield will be comfortably in his 30s.
What's less certain is who will be directing. Rumours circulated prior to the release of The Amazing Spider-Man suggesting that director Marc Webb wouldn't return to helm the second film, and while they didn't appear to have too much foundation to them, they've not been denied. When Webb has been asked on the promotional circuit if he'd been returning for the next film, he's played a straight bat, non-committal answer. Furthermore, Sony hasn't had anything to say on his return one way or the other.
Given that work needs to start on the new film in earnest shortly, we expect a formal announcement to be not far away. If Webb does move away from the franchise though, who do you think would take it up? Suggestions in the comments please...
