Shot on a miniscule budget, Monsters rightly propelled its director Gareth Edwards to international attention in 2010. And with Edwards now linked to a currently-in-development Godzilla reboot, Vertigo Films has been looking to make a Monsters sequel with a new writer and director.
With the possibility of a Monsters TV series discussed, and Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas reported to be involved in a new feature last year, it’s only now that firm details of who’ll be making Monsters 2 have emerged. According to Screen Daily and Bleeding Cool, the film will subtitled Dark Continent, and Jay Basu will be writing the script, while Tom Green will direct.
Jay Basu co-wrote the Brit running drama Fast Girls (you can read our verdict on that here) with Noel Clarke and Roy Williams, while Tom Green is best known as the director behind the Misfits UK TV series.
It was previously said that Monsters 2 would be a “Heart Of Darkness-style story”, and although the project’s had a personnel change, that subtitle certainly hints at the same African setting as Joseph Conrad’s novella – making its location a very different one from the first Monsters, which was set in Mexico.
Considering Gareth Edwards’ film was a largely improvised movie with a distinctive arthouse feel, we’re intrigued to see which direction Dark Continent might head. More news on the Monsters sequel as we get it.
