Vivendi to sell Activision?

Vivendi may be looking to sell off Activision Blizzard in order to reverse a share price drop…

Although it may sound like crazy talk, it would appear as though Vivendi, owner of many profitable businesses, including Universal Music Group, is looking into the possibility of selling off its shares in gaming heavyweight Activision.

In order to combat a 28% fall in share prices, Vivendi may well sell its 61% stake in the games publisher, or may further reduce the stake, as it did last year with a 3% sell off.

Despite Activision being the fourth most profitable company under the Vivendi banner, with Call of Duty being the key factor, later on in the month the decision will be made as to whether the gaming arm will be let go.

It may sound like a bad move, and Call of Duty alone is surely a reason to keep Activision around, as sales of Modern Warfare 3 even outstripped those of Avatar, but as the company is facing a nine year low stock price listing, it may need an attractive offer to entice potential buyers.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is coming later on this year, and has already reportedly broken pre-order sales records, so we’ll have to see if Vivendi will be reaping the profit, of it someone else will have their hands on the reins by then.
