The wheels are quietly turning on the plans to resurrect the Police Academy franchise, with Deadline now reporting that a fresh screenwriter has been hired.
Jeremy Garelick has been recruited by New Line to do a fresh pass at the script. Presumably the last draft, penned by David Diamond and David Weissman, didn't include the chortle-inducing staples such as a bumbling Commandant, a very quiet woman suddenly shouting very loudly, and, of course, a trip to the Blue Oyster bar.
Scott Zabielski is the man confirmed to direct the movie. Earlier this year, Michael Winslow revealed that the film was shooting later in 2012, for a 2013 release. He also broke the news that Shaquille O'Neal has been asked to play Hightower in the film, replacing the late Bubba Smith.
