Bethesda and id have revealed that Doom 3 is returning to current gen consoles in a re-mastered BFG Edition…

In what is a rather out of the blue announcement, Bethesda and id have revealed that the divisive Doom 3 is to be re-released on current platforms in the form of Doom 3: BFG Edition.

The re-mastering, which is due sometime this year, will include seven new levels, along with the Resurrection of Evil add-on previously sold separately. Along with the expansion and new levels, the game has received plenty of attention to detail, include visual optimised in 3D, improved lighting and rendering, as well as an overhauled checkpoint system.

Perhaps more importantly for many of Doom 3’s less than impressed critics is the inclusion of a, wait for it… an armour-mounted torch. Yep, there may still be no gaffer tape on Mars, but at least armour now comes with the option of illumination built-in.

With support for 3D and a much improved frame rate, something that hindered the first game more than a little, Doom 3: BFG Edition may well be the version of Doom 3 we should have had when it first dropped. However, the trailer below doesn’t exactly make the game look all that different from the initial release, but we’ll see just how good Doom 3 can look when it arrives on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year.
