A clip from David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis

David Cronenberg’s next film, the hallucinatory drama-thriller Cosmopolis, looks like one well worth looking out for. And here’s a new clip to get us in the mood…

The gore and latex of David Cronenberg’s earlier films may be absent from the clip below, but there are indications everywhere that this is a product of the Canadian master’s old hands. There’s the incredibly still, intimate cinematography. The glacial, intense performances. And then there are those strange chaps at the end, whose eerie chant (complete with dead animal props), “A spectre is haunting the world!” feels like a deliberate reference back to the “Death to the demoness, Allegra Geller!” and “Long live the new flesh!” slogans of eXistenZ and Videodrome respectively.

In other words, it’s evident that, although Cosmopolis is adapted from a novel by Dom DeLillo, Cronenberg’s put his own personal thumbprints all over it. And if you’re wondering what the hell’s going on in the clip posted here, Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) is a 20-something millionaire who’s about to lose his fortune on the stock market. Just as his financial world falls apart, the real world around him appears to follow suit. As he embarks on a hedonistic voyage across Manhattan, he begins to suspect that he isn’t merely paranoid – and that someone really may be after him. As for what those rodent-waving men are all about, we’ll just have to wait and see.

We're still awaiting a confirmation on Cosmopolis' UK release date - as soon as we have one, we'll let you know.
