The hard to type FPS/RPG, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has bitten the radioactive big one…
It's news that'll cause many veteran PC gamers to raise a glass of vodka is sorrow, but it's been confirmed that, following the closure of GSC Game World, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has, indeed, been canned.
This news comes despite reports in mid-March that the game was in development, which prompted some optimism about the highly anticipated sequel to one of the PC's best IPs.
Sadly, due to arguments regarding rights to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. name, the sequel is unlikely to ever see the light of day. However, it's not all bad news. Many of the team from the now defunct GSC Game World have joined a new company, Vostok Games, and, although S.T.A.L.K.E.R. may be gone, the team are working on a new title called, Suvarium.
Survarium (currently a working title) is going to be a free-to-play MMOFPS, and will be similar in many ways to S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and should even expand upon the post apocalyptic-theme, this time not limited to the area around the Chernobyl NPP. Instead, it focuses on a ‘mass scale ecological catastrophe on Earth".
Survarium is being developed for PC using a proprietary engine, and is penned in for a late 2013 release.
So, it's a bit of a silver lining, at least, and although fans will mourn the loss of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, who knows that Vostok's new game will bring to the table?
