Need For Speed

A movie based on the racing game franchise Need For Speed? Er, it just moved a step closer...

This might just be getting a little silly now. Appreciating that movie studios are looking far and wide for inspiration for their films, we still await – nearly 20 years after the first – a really, really good moved based on a videogame.

That’s not stopping anyone trying, and there are lots more on the way. And, as it turns out, Electronic Arts wants a bit of the action.

Variety is reporting that the firm is shopping around the idea of a Need For Speed movie (based on the long-running racing game franchise), presumably in the slipstream (see what we did there?) of the Fast & Furious franchise. John Gatins, who worked on Real Steel, has been recruited to put together a pitch, which the firm will then shop around to movie studios.

Which will bite? Well, Sony, Paramount and Warner Bros are all said to be interested. Universal isn't, but then it's busy with Fast Six and Fast Seven. We'll keep you posted, as this one might go on for some time.

Surely Tetris: The Film has just moved one step closer…
