Director David Gordon Green’s long-discussed Suspiria remake is still going ahead, and set to commence shooting in September…
Director David Gordon Green, well known for his well-acted dramas such as All The Real Girls and Undertow, as well as bawdy comedies such as Pineapple Express, TV’s Eastbound And Down and last year’s distinctly uneven Your Highness, is turning his hand to horror. And it’s been known for some time that the object of his attention is a remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 masterpiece Suspiria, a Technicolor nightmare involving ballet, witches and dark, stormy nights.
Green spoke to us enthusiastically about his take on Suspiria last year, saying that “I've written it with the sound designer, so we've really written it from a unique perspective. We've come at it not from a traditional narrative way, but from the perspective of sound. It's a fun experiment for me, to see how it works out.”
Sound, of course, was a key part of the unique Suspiria experience back in the 70s, with Argento’s hackle-raising Goblin soundtrack complementing the vibrant and surreal imagery. Perhaps sensing that a Suspiria without a booming Goblin backwash would be like Psycho without the shower scene, Green has secured the rights to the original film’s soundtrack.
What’s more a September start date has been confirmed, and financing’s all arranged, with Crime Scene Pictures behind the production. Although it’s unlikely that Green’s Suspiria will replace Argento’s in our affections, we’re intrigued to see what he does with the Suspiria property – particularly given that Darren Aronofsky borrowed bits of its premise and atmosphere for Black Swan.
We’re also intrigued to see who plays the lead ballet student, once played by Jessica Harper. With the shoot mere months away, we’re sure to hear some casting news soon.
