Has the Internet won? Will Bioware change the ending to Mass Effect 3? Sort of…
BioWare announced, to an audience of gasping fans earlier today, that it plans to release some DLC called Extended Cut for the endingly-challenged Mass Effect 3. This DLC, which will be totally free, will expand on the current ending and will arrive in the summer.
Contrary to people's beliefs shortly after the DLC was announced, this doesn't mean that the endings themselves will be changed, but instead they'll be expanded upon, with extra cinematic and epilogue scenes. This has been clarified via the official BioWare website (link below).
The extra content will manage this story-refinement, as it'll "offer extended scenes that provide additional context and deeper insight to the conclusion of Commander Shepard's journey." As stated on the BioWare official Extended Cut FAQ.
Under the question of whether there'll be any additional endings, the answer reads, "No. BioWare strongly believes in the team's artistic vision for the end of this arc of the Mass Effect franchise. The extended cut DLC will expand on the existing endings, but no further ending DLC is planned."
So, the Internet has won a small victory, and although the existing endings will remain in place, hopefully the additional content will flesh them out enough to provide a little more clarification of some of the plot holes and odd quirks present.
As I've already stated myself, I didn't have as big a problem with the endings as some, but I did feel that there was plenty that BioWare could have done better. The ultimate final choice that effectively does away with any of your own decisions in the three games was perhaps the most bitter pill for people to swallow, and it looks as though that's not going to change. One thing's for sure though, the extended scenes better be pretty damn good, or I fear the Internet may well explode.
