Microsoft planning “AAAA” title

Microsoft’s new titles are going to be so good, it needs another vowel please, Carol…

We're all familiar with the term ‘AAA title'. Often thrown around the industry and press, it's a term applied to a game that's practically guaranteed to break sales records. These are big name releases backed up by big budget development, and usually a have successful prequels, or a big name license.

Call of Duty, Zelda, Halo, Arkham City, Mass Effect... They're all AAA releases, and represent some of the best of their kind on the market. Hell, the term AAA is so indicative of quality and success even countries like the USA and UK have a AAA credit rating. Erm, wait...

So, when Microsoft, via a job posting on its Talent Network, advertises a job opening to work on the "delivery of a AAAA experience", you should take note. Microsoft is planning some seriously high end stuff, and it's so good, it's going to have to go to quad-level quality.

Amongst the responsibilities listed in the posting were:

"The EP will have P&L responsibility for a major Xbox AAAA console title." And "Deliver the end-to-end AAAA title experience (Concept, Prototype, Greenlight, Pre-Production, Production, Release, ongoing revenue streams and a complete franchise plan)."

It's not clearly stated in the post exactly what this future title will be, or indeed if it's even on the current Xbox 360 platform, but it's clear Microsoft is up to something. Will it deserve the extra A? We'll have to wait and see, and make do with plain old AAA titles for now.
