Tom Cruise has had the idea to fuel the planned Tropic Thunder Les Grossman spin-off...
Personally, I liked Tropic Thunder. It worked well as a send up of the entertainment industry, whilst being a decent action movie in its own right. One of the many entertaining turns in the film was Tom Cruise’s exec Les Grossman, and you might recall that plans were afoot to spin the character off into a film of his film.
I'm not quite sure the character justifies that, but it looks like I might be alone. What's more, Michael Bacall has been discussing the project, which he's writing, whilst publicising Project X and 21 Jump Street.
“Tom [Cruise] had an incredible idea on how to tell this story, and give it some real emotion and heart and as soon as he hit on that idea, it was off to the races. But I feel really good about that project, and I hope that it will happen.”
“I think people would be disappointed if that character didn’t carry around that explosive rage that we associate with him and that’s what makes his performance so enjoyable. But none of us feel like the movie could sustain what was a 90-minute Les Grossman tirade.”
“So we want to try and get a little bit of a glimpse of where that rage is coming from, the guy will be a force of nature, but we want to have some kind of emotional connection to him.”
So he addresses some of the problematic elements of the potential film, but I’m still not entirely convinced it will happen. There's a reason that comedy supporting characters tend to stay as supporting characters, too, which makes me wonder how all this will turn out. Happy to be pleasantly surprised, though.
