David Morrissey is to join season three of The Walking Dead after landing a much-anticipated regular role in AMC’s hit zombie series

After Deadwood actor John Hawkes reportedly passed on the role, David Morrissey (State of Play, Red Riding) has been confirmed as the man set to play ‘Philip’ Blake a.k.a The Governor in season three of The Walking Dead. The part marks David Morrissey’s US television debut, as he joins fellow UK actor Andrew Lincoln on set.

Fans of Robert Kirkland's graphic novels will recognise The Governor as a major adversary of Rick and co., and a seriously nasty piece of work. The character adopts his Arnie-esque moniker post-apocalypse when he comes to lead the small survivor settlement of Woodbury.

The Walking Dead’s third season will comprise 16 episodes and is due to start production this spring. Read our reviews of the current series, here.
