An adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1972 TV horror The Night Stalker is pressing ahead, with Edgar Wright and Johnny Depp on board...

Johnny Depp and his producing Christi Dembrowski have reportedly been keen on adapting the 1972 made for TV horror The Night Stalker for some time now. And it looks as though the project is now closer to going into production, as Disney has recruited Edgar Wright to direct.

Depp will star in the lead role, but as yet the film is without a script so he’ll have plenty of time to finish with his duties on The Lone Ranger before starting work. It will also give Edgar Wright more time to work on Ant-Man and the final part of his Cornetto Trilogy, The World’s End.

The original airing of The Night Stalker saw a Vegas reporter investigating a string of murders that he suspects were the work of a vampire. The show was penned by Richard Matheson, so whoever steps in to pen the script for the adaptation will have some great material to work from, and some big boots to fill.

With this being a Disney production, a PG-13 rating is being sought to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Hopefully Wright will be given free rein to let his creativity run riot, but at the same time I would like to see Depp a little more restrained than he has been of late.

A release date for the film has yet to be penned in, but it’s believed that the plan is for it to shoot early next year.
