At the weekend, actor Benedict Wong spoke briefly about his role in Prometheus and its 3D. Here’s what he had to say…
As Ridley Scott's much-anticipated Alien prequel looms ever closer, more information about Prometheus continues to emerge. Actor Benedict Wong was a guest of Peter Serafinowicz on his BBC 6 Music show on Saturday, and revealed a little about his role and some of the behind-the-scenes activity.
Wong, who plays Ravel in the film, is no stranger to science fiction, having appeared in Moon and Sunshine (and also known for his roles in UK sitcom The IT Crowd and his interviewer's short-lived sketch series, The Peter Serafinowicz Show). After a brief discussion of Avatar and the re-release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (for which Serafinowicz provided the voice of Darth Maul), Wong talked about the technical aspects of Prometheus:
"It's gonna be in 3D, so get thee to an IMAX. The cameras are... well, if you got very excited about the 3D usage on Avatar, it's gonna be the next level now. The type of cameras they're using - the RED cameras. The technicians that use the cameras are really excited about it."
Peter Serafinowicz pushed his subject for some behind-the-scenes gossip, asking, "Didn't you say that Ridley was watching the takes back with 3D glasses on a special monitor?"
"Yeah. Occasionally, when you do a take and what I kind of sort of like is asking for a PPB - Personal Play Back. So, I sat down and put the glasses on, and then Ridley called me, ‘What a minute!’ And I was like, you know, when you think you're doing something wrong? But he was absolutely fine, he was like, ‘Okay, okay. Sit down,’ and just cranked it up. It looks fantastic."
Serafinowicz, a huge fan of the original Alien film, asked, "The design of the ship, is it like the Alien ship [the Nostromo], with clackety-clack computers and big chunky keyboards and stuff?"
"The first day we started, we were all in on the first day, so we were all a bit new. And then when we walked up onto the spaceship, I just remember the first steps that I took and you could hear the metal grill!"
Wong also revealed that he flies the ship with Scottish actor Emun Elliott [Game Of Thrones] and when asked if he gets to meet the alien he stated, "For the record, no comment."
