There’s trouble at THQ, and recent announcements don’t bode well for the big name publisher

There have been widespread reports of late that publisher THQ has been having financial difficulties. Recently denied by the company, it appears that these reports were, in actual fact, true.

It's been announced that THQ, which publishes such big name titles as Saints Row, Red Faction, Darksiders and the WWE series of games, is about to cut up to 240 jobs. These positions apparently come from the admin and sales sections of the company, rather than development, which may alleviate the worry of upcoming titles, such as Darksiders II, being canned before release.

However, if that wasn't a bad enough sign, how about the CEO, Brian Farrell, taking a pay cut of 50%? Dropping from $718,500 to $359,250, that's some cut, even if the 240-odd laid off could only dream of this new reduced salary.

It's certainly quite telling when a company CEO accepts such measures to help keep a company afloat, and these moves, along with a new strategy of moving away from the kids' software market to focus on core games may help THQ stay alive for a little longer. The question is, can the company dig itself out of a hole in the current economic climate, or will THQ be the next notch on Death's scythe?
