Seemingly a permanent fixture on cinema screens, Michael Fassbender’s schedule doesn’t look to get any less busy as he looks ahead to the follow up to X-Men: First Class.
Whilst I personally wasn’t completely sold on last year’s X-Men: First Class, I thought the central performances from Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy as Magneto and Charles Xavier were excellent.
Fassbender is an incredibly busy man, but when he signed to star in X-Men: First Class, he agreed to a multi-picture deal so it’s a near certainty that we’ll see him reprise his role. In a recent interview he shed some light on the sequel and how he sees Magneto as much more than an out and out villain:
“You know what’s interesting about Magneto and Professor X from the comic books as well, is there’s such a complexity to their relationship. It’s not just like clear-cut enemies; they’re best friends as well.”
“In the comic books even after they’ve had this sort of rift, Professor X asks Magneto to come back and look after the students at certain points... I think there’s always that complexity in their relationship and we want to keep that alive as possible, because that’s I think a really interesting thing - the conflict there.”
Rumours have it that Fox is confident that Matthew Vaughan will return to direct, I hope if he does, and that they give him more time to work on the film, as I got the sense with First Class that certain aspects were rushed. I can't help but feel that if the production wasn’t given such a strict deadline, some of the rough edges could have been smoothed out, resulting in a better film.
