Bridesmaids may have been one of last year's biggest hit comedies, but that hasn't tempted Kristen Wiig into making a second one, it seems...
There's been a real appetite for bawdy R-rated comedies of late, with both The Hangover and its sequel making plenty of money. Last year, Bridesmaids was similarly successful, raking in a remarkable $288million from a $32.5million investment – and with returns like that, you'd be forgiven for assuming that Universal would have every intention of pressing ahead with a sequel.
Unfortunately, writer, actor and co-producer Kristen Wiig doesn't have any intentions of making one, confirming earlier reports suggesting this was the case. According to E! Online (news of which comes to us via Coming Soon), Wiig has no interest in doing a second Bridesmaids.
"[We're] not planning on doing one," Wiig said. "We had a special time making the first one, but we're really excited to try something else."
Wiig plans to press ahead on something new with her Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo instead. "It's going to be a little bit of a different tone, but it's going to be a comedy, for sure," Wiig said.
Whether Universal will attempt to make a second Bridesmaids without Wiig isn't clear, but given she was such a vital part of its success, it's probably not very likely. Judd Apatow, the film's producer, has suggested it's not in his immediate plans, either.
