From whose perspective will the story of The Avengers movie be told? Joss Whedon has just given the answer…

The problem with having a movie chock-full of leading characters is that, from a storytelling perspective, there’s a big decision to be made. Do you tell the story through the eyes of one, or do you try and juggle it via the eyes of many? Bluntly, who’s the protagonist going to be?

In the case of The Avengers, Joss Whedon has been chatting to Entertainment Weekly about that very thing, and here’s what he had to say.

“I set out with a very simple problem”, he explained. “There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that’s what my movie has to be about”.

With that in mind, “much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and see this weird-ass world. Everyone else has just been living in it”.

Given that the promo material thus far has hinted at a film weighted in the direction of Iron Man (Marvel’s biggest movie franchise under its own direct control), Whedon’s words are welcome. We don’t expect The Avengers to suddenly become Captain America 2 or anything, but it might mean that duties are shared a bit more evenly round…
