The Golden Globes 2012: full list of winners

Ricky Gervais hosting the Golden Globes

Here's the full list of winners from the 2012 Golden Globes, and our thoughts on what won...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has rarely been a reliable indicator of excellence over the years with its Golden Globes awards, particularly with regards movies, but its 69th giving out of gongs seemed to get a lot of things right, and pointed towards some likely Oscar winners, too.

For instance, the battle for Best Picture is now a two horse race between The Descendants and The Artist, a pair of film that both took home a top prize from the gongs. Likewise, George Clooney and Meryl Streep look good bets for the top acting prizes, Woody Allen’s screenplay award should be replicated at the Oscars, and don’t be surprised if the supporting acting gongs go to Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer.

The giving of the Best Animated Feature prize to The Adventures Of Tintin is the film award that perplexed me the most (outside of best song, but then, the best songs weren’t even nominated). Putting aside arguments over whether Tintin was a true animated film, my biggest complaint was that Rango and Arthur Christmas were both better, and deserved the award a lot more.

I’d be surprised, too, if Martin Scorsese got the Best Director Oscar, although he did win the Golden Globe for the divisive Hugo.

In the world of television, it was harder to find too many grumbles. Downton Abbey’s success was little surprise, but I was thrilled to see Peter Dinklage (Game Of Thrones) and Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) pick up prizes for genre shows (and a welcome win for Idris Elba, as well). It’s hard to argue against Modern Family and Homeland, too.

Here, then, is the complete list of winners from the night…
