Ahead of the release of The Avengers, Robert Downey Jr has been discussing the further adventures of Tony Stark and his fantastic suit.
With The Avengers still a few months away, Robert Downey Jr has been talking about Iron Man 3, which has the enticing prospect of his reunion with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang writer/director Shane Black.
And it seems that Downey Jr has high hopes for the movie. Tony Stark himself had to say the following of the second sequel to Iron Man:
“I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made. But I think we have to remember what made the first one good, it was very character-driven. It was very odd. It was kind of outrageous. And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart.”
It’s little surprise that he’s talking of it being a better film, given how lukewarm the reception to Iron Man 2 was, particularly in comparison to the praise the first film received. He's right on the first one, though: part of its strength was that it focussed on a few key characters, rather than flooding the screen a number of faces who ultimately didn’t get the time and attention they deserved.
I’m not sure I agree with the statement that Iron Man was very odd and outrageous, though. It was good fun and highly entertaining, and that’s why it was such a strong film.
As much respect as I have for Jon Favreau and what he did with the character, I can’t wait to see what Shane Black can bring to the table.
