Bond 50

Putting together your Christmas list for 2012 yet? Then you might want to make room for the newly-announced Bond 50 Blu-ray collection...

If you were wondering what the big Christmas Blu-ray boxsets were likely to be for 2012 (following Jurassic Park and Star Wars last year), then MGM might just have filled in one of the gaps.

We already know that the Indiana Jones films are likely to be released this year. But there’s the small matter of every official James Bond film heading to the format, too.

The initial batch of back catalogue Bond films was first rolled out a few years ago, to apparently disappointing sales. That’s led to MGM and Fox holding back the release of further 007 movies on Blu-ray until the format’s userbase was at the level it’s about now. Then, of course, there’s the small matter of the 50th birthday of the James Bond movie franchise to celebrate, too.

And the now-announced boxset certainly seems to be some celebration. Promising 22 films and 130 hours of bonus material (“including some new and exclusive content”), it brings the nine Bond movies currently not on Blu-ray to the format. Whether they’ll immediately be available outside of the set is unclear, but we suspect they won’t be. The emphasis will be on selling the Bond 50 collection first, we’d wager.

There’s no firm release date as of yet, but with Skyfall, the 23rd Bond movie, arriving in cinemas in October, somewhere around there would make sense. Oh, and that picture over there? That's the official box art...
