Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters

The film is shot, but Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner, has just been bumped back from March to next January…

2012 is a year that has no shortage of fairy tales being subverted on the big screen. Snow White And The Huntsman looks the most promising, and Mirror, Mirror looks the least. Jack The Giant Killer could and should be fun. And then there’s Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters, which was due from Paramount in March.

Only it’s not arriving in March, now. Instead, the film has been pushed back nearly a year. Now, you can expect to see the film on January 11th 2013.

Ordinarily, you might conclude that that’s a graveyard slot, a traditional dumping ground for movies. But in 2010, Green Hornet scored nearly $100m in the US alone with a January release. And Paramount itself has coined in a bumper $34m opening weekend just last week for The Devil Inside.

No official reason has been given for the film’s delay, although given that we’ve not had a poster or trailer yet, that March 2nd 2012 release date might just have been a bit ambitious. It’s hardly a low profile project, though. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton are starring, with Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) directing.

Part of Paramount’s thinking, of course, might be to allow The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy to boost Renner’s star power a little more, which it can ride off the back of.

Whatever the reason, Hansel and Gretel will definitely not be hunting witches this year. We know that much for certain...
