Hollywood is planning another take on Stephen King's Carrie, in a film that promises to be more faithful to the novel. Or something.
It’s been a good month or two now since an announcement came through that Hollywood was plundering its archives for a terrific film to put through the remake meat grinder (Starship Troopers was the last one of note). Rest assured, though, that there’s a whole host of Hollywood executives perusing the shelves of Blockbuster to see which films they can pillage for another bash at.
Sadly, one said Hollywood executive appears to have picked on Carrie.
Based on the Stephen King book of the same name, Carrie was memorably brought to the screen by Brian De Palma in 1976. Anchored by an outstanding central performance by Sissy Spacek, it remains one of the finest adaptations of King’s writing to hit the big screen. But that’s not stopping someone else having another go.
In line with the language that surrounds remakes of films adapted from books, the line here is that the new film will be more faithful to the book, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who rewrote the Spider-Man musical Turn Off The Dark, has penned a script.
On the upside, Kimberly Peirce is set to direct the film. Peirce made the excellent Boys Don’t Cry, and is about as far removed from a hack director as you can get. Still, it all seems just a little pointless. Maybe that’s just us.
There’s no word yet on who will be playing Carrie this time around, nor when to expect the new film. We’ll pass on the details as we get them.
