It’s been just over a week now since news emerged that Patty Jenkins, the previously-announced director of Thor 2, was no longer set to helm the movie. The news of her departure was a surprise, but it all sounded very amiable. In fact, much was made of the fact that Jenkins may yet sign up for a future Marvel movie.
All fine and dandy, then.
However, a new piece over at The Hollywood Reporter has thrown fresh light on Jenkins’ departure, and suggests that it wasn’t all as straightforward as had been portrayed. The articles says that “Jenkins was fired without warning” from Thor 2, much to the unhappiness of Natalie Portman, who is described as “furious”.
So why was Jenkins apparently given the heave-ho? The Hollywood Reporter’s sources suggest “Marvel became concerned that Jenkins was not moving decisively enough and feared the film might miss its November 2013 release date”, although apparently, Marvel itself doesn’t have a script in place yet.
Currently, Marvel is apparently looking for a rewrite on the script, the last draft of which was penned by Don Payne.
The running favourite to take over the director’s chair is one of Daniel Minahan and Alan Taylor, two of the helmers on HBO’s Game Of Thrones. Given that Marvel is looking to hit a release date that’s less than two years away, it might just have to get its skates on.
Neither Patty Jenkins nor Marvel has commented on The Hollywood Reporter’s piece, at least as far as we can tell.
