Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater are set to make a further film in the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset series…
If you’re looking for the antidote to cloying romantic comedies, then Richard Linklater’s outstanding films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset (the latter being one of the most perfect sequels we’ve seen) are romances where you can’t help but root for the central couple.
Both films centre on Ethan Hawke’s Jesse and Julie Delpy’s Celine, and both follow the characters across a limited amount of time before they have to go their separate ways. Effectively, both movies are two people talking, and little more than that. And yet they’re both outstanding, and the career highlights, for us, of both the leads and the director.
There was a gap of nine years between the first and second films, and that’s led to questions as to whether we might get to see just what Jesse and Celine are up to now. The answer? It looks like a yes.
Ethan Hawke all but confirmed the news in a piece at Allocine, where he said that “Well, I don’t know what we’re going to do but I know the three of us have been talking a lot in the last six months. All of three of us have been having similar feelings that we’re ready to revisit those characters.”
He added that “There’s nine years between the first two movies and, if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again so we’re really started thinking that would be a good thing to do. We’re going to try write it this year.”
The question, then, is what will the film be called? There was some fine speculation on our Twitter feed yesterday (we’re looking at you, @paulmartinovic), and feel free to add your suggestions in the comments.
Before Lunchtime, anyone?
