With speculation surrounding the casting of the leads, offers have been made to Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham-Carter to appear in Akira. But who will they play?

Following last week’s news that the live action remake of Akira had been green lit, we've been now been given some indication of who would be likely to feature in the film. It was rumoured last week that Garrett Hedlund is the frontrunner for either Tetsuo or Kaneda, and it's now been revealed that Gary Oldman has been offered the role of the Colonel, and Helena Bonham Carter has bee approached for the role of Lady Miyako.

The fact that the film is to have a western cast, with a New Manhattan rather than Neo-Tokyo setting has caused a significant amount of controversy, but it’s a good sign, perhaps, that actors such as Oldman and Bonham-Carter have been offered roles. Hopefully the rest of the cast will be of a similar standard.

Oldman’s schedule is currently taken up by The Dark Knight Rises, and he's currently linked with a fantasy drama called Blood. Bonham-Carter will be seen next in Dark Shadows, and is attached to Great Expectations and Les Miserables.

Jaume Collet-Serra is set to direct, and the film is scheduled to be released sometime in 2013 with a reported $90m budget.
